Modded 335i vs Shelby GT500. Who would win?

Well, I'm not a fan of bench racing....but I was wondering if any of you guys ran one of these stock Shelby GT500? Supposed to have 500hp and weight 3900 lbs.

One of my buddy ownes a stock one and he claims he can smoke me. I'm trying to get him to race me and keeps comming up with excuses.

My mods are in my sig.

Drivers race, i'd say. None of the GT500s i've ever encountered have been as fast as the numbers suggest. They usually run mid to high 12's in the 1/4 trapping 116-117ish, and those are pretty close to procede numbers i'd say.

1/4 it's a drivers race. Now given that the GT500's seem to be trapping in the 116-117 area (which is at least 2-3 mph faster then the quickest 335's), if the race goes on for a longer length the GT500 should start to put some distance between it and the 335. The fastest time for a stock GT500 on dragtimes is a 12.2 @ 117.1.

there are some good forums to visit for answers...

I think SVTperformance.com is a good one... At one point I was trying to get a GT500 and browsed many a forum. I remember quite a few guys running 11 sec 1/4mi with only slicks... its a damn fast car stock that has awesome straight line performance and is as easily moddable, if not more so, than the 335i.

But its a mustang which means big, heavy, jerky, and cheap... but thats awesome if you are looking for a modern muscle car experience.

agreed, it's pretty much crap in anything other then a straight line. It's a real disappointment in that regards. Given it's HP, it's kind of a disappointment in a straightline performance too. It's just too damn heavy.

A little off topic...but...I was watching an old Clarkson video of them running a Rousch Mustang and the GT500. Even though the Rousch has less horsepower, it had a superior suspension setup and was WAY quicker around Willow Springs.

Hmmm...interesting. I was looking at some stock dynos and they seem to be making 420-430whp.

My car probably makes around 350whp without the DP tune and plenty more once I get that map.

I figured up to like 120mph it would be a drivers race, same with the E60 M5's, after which they would pull away.

Depends on what mods your friend has done. If he's done pulley swaps, headers, exhaust, he should have a good power gain. However, if he's done some serious work, i.e. Kenne Bell or a Whipple, you'll get destroyed. IIRC, in an article I read where the stock SC was swapped with a KB (can't remember the size), the HP went to the mid 800's. Yes, eight hundreds.

Whether he can get all that power to stick and he's a good driver is another story.

I went with a SC cobra and barely stopped him from pulling GT500s going to keel haul you.

Road and track has the gt500 at 12.8 @113mph
motor trend had it at 12.7 @ 114mph

so i would agree....that would be a good race and a close one....let us know the results!!

If you have slicks and run from a stop you may be able to hang. Otherwise I'd put money on him walking you pretty hard.

Most of the dynos I've seen were around 420-430 whp. I don't know were you get your information from. Also, if they really made clode to 500whp...their trap speed wouldn't be around 113-115mph....it would be much higher.

According to www.svt.ford.com The GT500 is 500hp, 480 lb/tq, and 3,920lbs.

According to www.bmwusa.com The 335i coupe is 3571 lbs for the manual and 3582 lbs for the auto.

That puts the GT500 only 340 to 350 lbs heaveir than the 335i coupe, not 500 lbs. Again, according to the sites.

If you've seen the Top Gear (on last night as well), where Hampster tests the GT500. Did the track in 1:30 flat. Then Clarkson talked about the Rousch which had different suspension, and less power and was 2 seconds faster.

I thought they were talking about who's going to win not what car to buy

Given the #'s posted, you are going to loose. you will have to make 400+whp/tq plus good traction to take him over. To get there you will have to spend about 5-6k.

My money would be on the GT500, but if the GT driver stinks you could probably beat them if you have the right mods.
