Oil gauge went down one quart???

Is this normal? my car has 4800 miles. and today I realized that my gause showed one noth missing which im guessing is a quart. Should I just add a quart or what. Also, does this happen on a normal basis?

it happens. i've got 7300 miles and just added a second quart the other day. take it to your local bmw dealership and get them to top it off free of charge. our cars use a specialized oil that isn't available at your local auto parts store. its castrol TWS 10W60 full synthetic.

Yes,thats normal. Today I went to pic up mine and the salesman said that M-cars use lots of oil in the beginning, no problem!

one notch isn`t a quart - more like a half pint; it still says ok at the bottom of the gauge, right?
mine is down the same- I might add a little but don`t want to overfill.
You can buy quarts of BMW oil at your dealership so you have it handy when you need it.

very true...only one notch is no big deal. you'll get a control check message if you're a quart low. and don't buy the oil when you can get it free when you need it

Just go to bmw and pick up a case of 10w60. That's what I do and I have 2 quarts with me all the time.

free is good but the oil is $5/qt so he needs $1.25 worth of oil. Is that worth calling the dealer to make an appt, driving there, and waiting an hour? You`re time is worth more than that, isn`t it?

EXACTLY what I was thinking. If you had it, all you have to do is pop the hood and put it in. Imagine the trouble you have to go through just to get some oil from the dealership. The gas to the dealership and back will probably cost more.

at my dealership, all i do is pull into the service drive, say i'm a quart low on oil, porter runs inside and grabs a quart, fills it, and i'm on my way in 5 minutes. or i can extend my stay for another few minutes and get a free car wash my closest bmw dealership is about 3 miles from me so i suppose i can say it is worth it

Car wash at the dealership = FAIL

Don't do it man, I made the mistake of getting my first car wash at the dealership ----> swirls galore. Still have 'em by the way... I have to get my car professionally detailed now to get rid of them because I don't know shit about polishing with a porter cable... learn from my mistake.

meh, my dealership has a touchless wash bay. they just run it thru and hand dry it. no big deal. i still get it zaino waxed every 2 weeks to take care of the swirls, although i've yet to see any swirls. i stand behind my dealership's work, they're legit

I made the mistake of letting them wash my ZHP once and there were scratches on the trunk lid I never got out
now I always tell them NO WASH !!!

Wow this site is great, so many responses on such a short time. Thank u very much guys. Yep I just realized its not a quart, and it does say oil level is ok. Its just missing one little notch. I will go buy 2 bottles of that oil tom and whenever that happens do it myself. How much should I put in? BTW, I went into the service info from my idrive and went to oil level. It says ok and it shows 4 little bars. So my guess is one of those bars represent a quart right? All 4 were still there tho lol.

Oh and BTW, yeah, never let a dealership wash ur car. EVER. Made that mistake once with my G35. It wasnt even my fault cayse I made sure to tell them, NO WASH. But they did it anyway and guess what? Swirls all over the place. But I made sure they paid for my $450 detail at a very good detailing place. They didnt even argue because I had the proof of the sign they put on the windshield.
