bmw usa finally sending info

I know its not much yet, but I signed up for updates on BMWUSA.com for the E92 M3, and I finally got an email today saying the new M3 is coming etc. This might mean that our dealerships are getting bulletins regarding our babies.

"A lot can happen in a year. A complete interior and exterior restyling. An adrenaline-rushing 414-horsepower V8 engine power boost. And, despite two additional cylinders, body weight reduction of over 30 pounds. The all-new M3 Coupe once again sets the performance benchmark for its class.

Created at BMW's M-Divsion headquarters, the all new BMW M3 returns after one-year absence to be better and bolder than ever. The road trembles with anticipation."

"...body weight reduction of over 30 pounds."

What's this all about? Overall there was a weight gain, right?

Also, since this is specific to the US, the car will actually not be returning until after a 1.5 year absence.

I guess this is BMW marketing at it again.

I was about to point out the same thing.

I think it is important to be as critical of BMW as possible with their claimed "weight-saving design theme" in the new M3 when the car is actually quite a bit heavier than its predecessor.

I think you have to interpret it literally. The weight of the E92 M3 body (exterior panels and bumpers) is 30 pounds less than the weight of the E46 body.

Yeah, I agree with you. Its just that that is not particularly relevant. What matters is the overall weight of the car. Its just the marketing department trying to find something to talk about.

Don't get me wrong - its great that BMW USA is starting to acknowledge the car (although pricing is still months away I am sure).

Is it possible they are saying there is a body weight reduction of 30lbs from the 335i to the M3?

I think that's more like it: that they are simply saying the E92 M3 weighs 30 lbs less than the E92 coupe if you exclude the engine weights.

It's exactly what they said....

The car's body is 30lbs lighter than the previous M3 !!! Even though the car is about 150lb more, the weight of the car is in a more suitable place.... lower and inwards towards the center of the car.

Which indicates it will handle ALOT better!

How did you deduce that from this, "And, despite two additional cylinders, body weight reduction of over 30 pounds. The all-new M3 Coupe once again sets the performance benchmark for its class." That is totally vague--we don't know if they are comparing the E92 M3 to the regular E92, or the E92 M3 to the E46 M3.

The engine is actually 30lbs lighter.

"Despite its higher displacement and two additional cylinders, this new V-8 is actually over 30 pounds lighter than its inline-6 predecessor. Compared to the 5-liter V-8 in the previous M5 generation, this new engine is nearly 100 lbs lighter."

When I got this in my inbox I actually got excited thinking I would see something or learn something new. Then was let down with no new information. I even went on the M3 site to look for new stuff. Oh well a few more months to wait I guess.

Oh I think that is extremely optimisitic, I hate to say. I will say February 2008 at the earliest. Based on when the released pricing for 335i, 550i, and 535i, I think this is a reasonable guess. I hope I'm wrong though.

Maybe. I mean, it would be hard to prove that without testing the two. Both have 50/50 F/R weight distribution. The E92 might have lower CoG, but I don't think that has been determined for sure yet, has it? And even so, there is still 150 lbs more to throw around. (Not that I care, since I've got the heavy vert anyway, and the new coupe will still be lighter if I do go that route.)

Got the "Ignition" 2nd email today

It takes you to a BMW South Africa site that I was not successful at entering fully, though. It didn't like my Identity Number or Mobile Number.
