DVD Navigation Disc read problems?

My Nav unit is acting up and asking me to put in the DVD map disc when it is already in. It does this randomly, sometimes in the middle of navigating somewhere. If you wait, sometimes it'll come back. Sometimes taking out the disc and reinserting helps. You can hear it spinning and it is trying to read the disc.

Anyone get this problem with their DVD Navigation? I talked to the dealer and they said they've seen this before and they'll have to replace the whole unit. That doesn't seem very good. The car is only 3 years old and the DVD drive goes?

I had a similar issue with the DVD Nav on my e46M3. Of course the dealer wants to replace the whole thing as the unit is only one part number. I ended up replacing the laser and that fixed it. $25 fix on my side instead of hundreds from the stealer.

How do you know where and what laser to get and how to take it apart?

It's covered under warranty for me but it'd be nice to know how to fix it myself if it happens out of warranty.

There was some data and DIY on one of the X5 navigation forums. If your under warranty don't sweat it. I was out warranty. If they replace the unit you will never know if it was actually the laser or something else. If the problem crops up again there should be other folks and more supporting data to hone in on the issue from a DIY perspective.
