20" Wheels and performance

I am confident that at some point in the near future I will have a new set of HRE's on my Jet Black M3.

I am leaning towards 19's but 20's do look nice. However, 20's would be a sacrafice on performance in my mind.

Thoughts?

not at all. The better a wheel is designed and constructed, the better the performance. We'e tracked our 20" wheels on our 997TT and im sure you will have no problems with the HRE if you choose to go with them

The wheel business is one of those things that you truly get what you pay for, good luck!

Thanks for the response and I agree the quality of the wheel is a big factor.... a well built 20" performance wheel is going to better a performer than a heavy chrome 18" for sure.

If it was me, I would get 19's. The ride is a little better, the rim less likely to get bent, and really why do you need 20's? My buddy's dad has a Ford GT, and when I was looking at it I noticed that it has 18's up front (235 width, smaller than the M3) and 19's in the rear (315 width,

20" are more prone to problems and bends and what not. HRE, iForged, DPE, 360 Forged are just not good quality, they're just same shit. period. u want good quality u gotta do BBS/Volk

agreed. all those companies you mentioned first aren't 8,000 ton forged and have no major motorsports involvement.

But the only 8,000 ton forged wheel makers I have heard of are Neez and Champion. Does BBS really use 8,000 ton on all their street wheels? I have my doubts....

For any given brand, 19's will typically outperform 20s. They are usually lighter, have lower rotational inertia, and the sidewall is already short enough to give responsive handling. The 20's will look good, but functionally are not much help. Any wheel can bend if you bash a pothole hard enough, so road quality may help you make your decision too. The bigger the potholes, the smaller wheel you should run.

BBS makes cast and forged rims. It is only used on their best wheels.

dollar for dollar 19's and actually probably 18's will outperform 20's IMP. strictly performance its all about the wheel and tire weight.

I agree with you on HRE, iforged DPE, etc... Their wheels are just way too heavy.

360 Forged actually makes very light 3-piece wheels compared to those companies. They are also very high quality wheels, haven't read any bad press about them.

If your M3 is not going to see the track on a consistant basis 360 Forged wheels are just fine. Very nice wheels actually.

Stock wheels are 20's.

We have done both 19's and 20's for HRE, BBS and 360Forged.
the 19's with a stepped lip look racy but a little smaller than a reverse lip.
the 20's fill up well on the M3 and certainly does not look big, even compared to a similar body size 335i.

As for performance, weight is an issue as unsprung weight comes into play for both accelerations, braking power and just pure road feel. both the size and construction will play a role in this.

When we offer wheel selection to our clients, we have to balance these factors well. However, one of the biggest decisions for us as a vendor is to connect customers to a brand that we know is run by a respectable company that will stand by their product 100%. Having said that, BBS, HRE, 360Forged, Vellano are a few of the companies that we trust will serve the customers in the long run.

Yeah but the car was designed for 20's, tested on 20's, raced on 20's, and they even play a roll in the many electronic aides. The M3 was designed and tested on 18's and 19's...

Then some of people on here that say 20's are for show and no go, need to put that in a disclaimer in their arguments.

Something like this:

I would only go with 20's if they were chrome and had spinners - that would be the superior performance!
