New software update 12/7/12

A new software update came out less than a week ago. My 2011 zcp dct was running 2010 software. The dealer said I was running E89X-10-09-511. Now I am running E89X-12-07-508. The new build is also referred to as 2.48.2.

The bucking problem in 1st gear is now gone.

It cost me $150 because the update wasn't done to fix a specific problem. I just wanted to have it done. However, I bet I could have gotten them to pay for it if I told them my car was bucking.

If you are running very old software you need to have it upgraded. Don't spend too much time thinking about it, just do it. I'm actually a little pissed off that the car didn't run like this when I bought it.

booya. I'll be trying to get this done on my 2011 ZCP right after the new year. Any perceived power changes?

The "12-07" suggests that the software is from july '12 I think, which would be 240E.

The dealer said the new update just came out on Sunday. I think the 12.07 part of 12.07.508 indicates the update was made on December 7th.

My car was delivered on 1/28/11 and the program I was running was 10.09.511. I'm guessing the old program was from October 9th 2010.

I don't think you need an update unless you are running 2010 software.

I can't feel the 10 or 20 horsepower gain that some claim. A small hp gain would be hard to notice in a car like this. The change in drive-ability is drastically better and that is what you will notice.

However, I do believe that the car does have more horsepower. The BMW tuners have had more time to update their programs and make them better.

what dealer in SD did you take it to? I've been going to South County for service solely due to horror stories I've heard from friends w/ E92s that took their cars to Vista and Encinitas...

I go to BMW of San Diego which is on Kearny Mesa Road. I'm new to BMW and have only been there 2 times. They did a great job repairing and working on my car each time. Highly recommended.

Wow, $150 to upgrade everything seems very reasonable. I hear stories of dealers asking $100s and saying the customer is responsible if the dealer burns out any modules in the process.

Same. Evidently there are aftermarket engine tunes that remove it for 6MT, which suggests it's a DME change, not a transmission software change, in which case the update may well remove the bucking for 6MT. Although even if it does, getting a free software update would probably require BMW to put out a service bulletin about the bucking and indicate that new software fixes the issue. I'm not too worried about it though given that it only happens for me when the engine is stone cold and at very low speeds.

Ok wasn't sure what you guys were talking about, but I get the bucking too. As long as you wait for cold start to end (aka around 15 seconds after starting the car), the issue isn't there.

I have been running E89X-12-03-502 for awhile now, which is 2.48. I wonder if I should update?

The bucking was almost gone after this update.

Not quite sure what you're talking about. The bucking on my MT is only at very low speeds and can be eliminated by pushing in the clutch pedal and than engaging again. This has happened to every MT car I'll ever owned and is due to normal drivetrain loseness.

I just had my 2011 DCT updated from 200E to 240E by EAS. From my understanding that is 5 updates behind. The car "bucks" less (even though it rarely happened before). The biggest improvement is cold start driving and the DCT seems to be sharper and quicker.
I should note EAS charges less than $150 to do the update and you can wait while it's done.

when I fill up with 100 octane racing fuel, the bucking you describe on cold starts completely goes away. try it and report back your results.

To be clear, which bucking problem are we talking about?
  1. The herking and jerking when driving around very very slowly in 1st gear
  2. The one that can happen when your stopped then accellerate really hard
  3. The one that people are talking about during the cold-start period

I don't think you need an update unless you are running 2010 software.
