Anyone want to look at oil filter housing cap and answer Q for me?
So I’ve got a leak coming off the oil filter housing at the 6 o’clock position. I recently opened housing and replaced oil filter and both o-rings, as well as lightly 400 grit sanded mating surface between cap and housing, but leak persists. Upon close inspection of the cap there appears to be a small notch in my cap. Not sure if this is by design or if it is a crack which just happens to be perfectly symmetrical looking to me.
If anyone has time to pop their hood and look at the front of their filter housing cap and tell me if they have that notch. Gonna be getting a new cap from Ecs, but the pics on their site do not show the cap In enough detail for me to see. Thanks guys! |

Why don't you post a photo for us to see what notch you're talking about

Perhaps my initial post was too vague for anyone to feel like they could accurately provide any sort of helpful feedback. What I was asking is for someone to pop their hood, and have a close look at the front portion of the oil filter housing, at the cap and housing junction.
Thanks to anyone who clicked into this thread. I am just going to run a sweat band around my filter housing, a la power steering reservoir, and wait for my replacement to arrive from ECS. |

Op, open up the camera app on your phone. Open your hood, and keep it open as you locate the item in question. With the hood still open take a picture of the item. Once you took a non-blurry photo, open your Bimmerpost app, return to this thread, and hit the reply button. Type something like "here is a pic guys", and use the little paperclip icon in the bottom left of the text window to attach the said picture.

For the record BMW changed the design of the oil filter cap due to the cap warping over time. Hence the new part number. The warp allows a small leak at the 6 o'clock position. Get the new cap and move on OP.
