Pretty stoked on lack of oil consumption...

So I am at 2500 miles and oil sensor says I'm still maxed out on oil (1300 miles since break in service). Just before the service I saw a one tick decrease in oil level and I didn't like that, mainly because I exceeded the 5500 RPM limit a couple times and was kicking myself for my lack of self-restraint. Since the service, the M3 has pretty much become the evening and weekend fun car, so I've been doing quite a bit of hard acceleration, and again, no consumption yet.

What are other people's experiences with this after break in service?

So far 900 miles no oil having to be added..I hit 6800rpm once or twice..

Man this car sounds good...

my service indicator shows service due in 130 miles.

I think I've added 3 quarts in 30k miles. It's probably been topped off at least on other time by the service dept, and plus had the oil service.

  1. This has been discussed to death.
  2. Mine burned a bit in the first 10k miles, less than a quart.
  3. Not a drop since.
  4. I hit redline multiple times during break-in.
  5. My engine get 20+ mpg and is happy.

Forgot to add that I change the oil at 7500 mile intervals.

I doubt your very slight loss of oil during break-in stems from exceeding 5500 rpm once or twice. I ended up one bar down at 1200 miles too without busting the break-in. The cars do burn a little oil to start but normally are pretty tight if not driven too hard.

Since 2004 I've gotten an "annual" oil change due to low use in what's now a total of 4 BMWs. I've never had to add a drop of oil in any of them in the interim.

I just got back from the Dragon's Tail in TN/NC, US 129, and I was about 1/3 under max when I started. I had a quart in the trunk just in case. I drove quite hard barely out of 2nd 3 times thru the tail staying between 5K - 6K rpm all 11 miles of the tail and when driving home back on I-40, my +1 quart ding went off. I added 1/2 a quart and then another splash when I got back home and I am back at Max now. My car has just a touch under 5K miles right now.

Let me say this.....WOW WOW WOW for this car on the Dragon's Tail. Holy Shit does it perform. If you have the chance to take you car there, do it!

There's no way you burned a qt of oil in 1K miles after never burning any... They proly screwed something up. Is it leaking? I hear those clowns at the dealership LOVE to forget O-Rings.
