2nd place for me is the chase in the British film, Robbery was was made the year before Bullitt by the same director, Peter Yates. It was the realism of this film, when seeing it, that made McQueen push for Yates to be the director of Bullitt and you can the similarities between the two.

3rd place for me would be The French Connection which does have another connection with Bullitt in that stunt driver Bill Hickman, who drove the black Charger in Bullitt also did The French Connection sequence.

I chose Bullitt because of the classic cars and sweet engines. Also driving up and down the hills of SF is so money. I know the mustang sounds are from a ford GT40 I love the double clutching on the up shift sounds.

I loved the 7 chase in Tomorrow Never Dies.

I was also partial to the chase in Dazed and Confused, where the freshmen are running in a Buick Electra from the seniors and Jason Smith's paddle reads "soul pole." That whole movie is full of awesome cars.

^ Yes absolutely (Dazed and Confused). Different kind of chase but a great chase none the less. And the cars in that movie.... Freaking awesome.

Perpetuating urban myth. The sound of the Mustang is not from a GT40.

My best friend of 25 odd years now lives near San Jose, so whenever I get the chance to fly over to see him and his wife, I always make sure I spend a few hours each visit and have a drive around some of the Bullitt chase locations

Wait a minute man, what car is it then? Please enlighten us. I'm totally curious whatever car it is. If it's a modded mustang more power to the mustang!
I'm always amazed at how much of san francisco looks the same as in the old movies: dirty harry, etc. Except now with many condos and wall to wall yuppies.

Not really a chase but I always liked the Cobra vs Ferrari at the end of the movie Gumball Rally (1976).

Indeed it is the modded Mustang. Famous hot rodder Max Balchowsky modified the cars for the filming, and the 'stang had milled heads, headers and a few other tweeks.
McQueen wanted the movie to be the first to be 'live sound' recorded.
However, during editing it was clear some of the sounds hadn't come out as well as hoped, so some sequences needed to be over dubbed, and in an interview in the late 1980's, Bud Ekins told how he had to then take the Mustang up to Willow Springs and remembered blowing the rear end up on it while winding up through the gears repetitively to record the engine sounds to be used on the bits of overdub.
