The 996 GT3 has better steering feel than the 997.1 and 997.2 GT3 due to the PASM in the 997 variants. But it is a lot more rough to live with and not quite as fast. In some ways its a classic. It's the last GT3 model not to have all of the computer gizmos.

I have an M3 and a 2011 GT3RS for the track. Believe me you do not want to DD a GT3 RS. Granted I have some suspension mods (full RSS kit) and a exhaust bypass but even before with OEM suspension and exhaust the GT3RS is just too stressful as a DD. You cannot make a phone call in the car, you will not hear anything. The stereo is a joke. I got it because my dealer convinced me that the radio delete makes resale more difficult, but you cannot use it when you are driving. Plus the car, the RS version, is a bit flashy.
On the track where the RS shines. And it is tough car, can handle the beating of track use. Mine is full of rock chips, small crack on the windshield etc. You don't want that abuse on your DD. |

Got the car last Friday. I guess it's time to say good bye to the M3. Yes, the interior is outdated, and it's noisy as well. The front splitter clearance is a joke! But boy, it's so much fun to drive, and shifts a LOT better than manual tranny on the E9x M3. And again, it will be my weekend/track car, so not going to have to worry about DD.

Oh so you bought the one from Jack Daniels. I called on this car and they said it was "sold" but some work was being performed to it. Such a clean car. Congrats!
My experience: I was in the exact same boat as you. I wanted to trade my m3 for a 996 gt3 as there was a limited production run on these cars and the history on them is amazing. I went to test drive one in Conn. My overall driving impression was this car felt much more raw and definitely more planted. I was totally impressed with the driver/car connection, its really amazing. I believe that the lack of electronics makes this possible. However, in comparing the two I felt it just was not worth the trade on the m3 because: 1. Performance feels very similar against the m3 obviously due to the high rev characteristics. You do loose a ton of the electronics and comfort items that you get in the m3. However, these also do make the character of the Porsche. 2. I grew to dislike the lights on the 996 more and more as time went on. I started off not really caring about it but as I looked at 997's, the headlights began to bother me. Last week I called the salesman and told him I was no longer interested in the car. My goal was to pick the car up tomorrow (my birthday) in which they were giving me great trade value on the m3 as well. It was a really tough choice to make. If I was in the position to keep both cars I would without a question buy the 996 GT3. However as a trade, the m3 is just too good a car to trade against it in my opinion. My goal is to keep the m3 and get 997 gt3 as soon as I can. Good luck with the car and I know you are totally going to enjoy it. I've done a ton of research on this car and there is nothing but good out there, especially on the legendary metzler engine. -Vin |

Therein lies the dilemma. It would be great to have a car that can do both when required. The M3 probably comes the closest to acheiving this as any car on the planet. Sure I like a dynamic car that makes me feel alive, but on a 3 hour drive, I want one that is comfortable too.

I most likely would've kept my E90 M3 if I wasn't looking for a bigger car, but since I was going to get a Highlander, I wanted to have a fun weekend/track car. And, totally agree with everyone that in terms of versatility, M3 is def the car to beat. But, if one wants absolute performance, GT3 really is in another league. Would I ever want to DD the GT3, hell no... but will I miss the 6mt E90 M3? no. Will i miss the 2011 DCT E93 M3, for sure.
Vin, I was working with Jack Daniels on this car for 3-4 weeks. It's still under Porsche CPO, therefore, they did a bunch of repairs and maintenance stuff for me prior to purchase. Overall, I am extremely happy with it. |

yeah it is a little low i suppose. first is not too useable. good for going sideways thru intersections i guess. i have a mustang with 4.10s and so i dont notice the M3 as being too bad.

Based on what I've seen at the track, the 996 GT3 will not be necessarily faster than the M3 in the hands of a regular driver. It doesn't strike me as a true performance upgrade.
It is a much more interactive car for sure, but personally I would have a hard time convincing myself to spend so much money on something that is not faster. Why not an Exige Cup, or an Atom, Caterham etc, if only for a track car?

My desire to change cars will likely not necessarily be to get a faster car but one that is more involving. Not sure I want to go much faster in a street car at the track, especially without a cage and other safety measures. I would like a more visceral car, something lighter that can carry more speed through corners (think Cayman R or equivalent.)
It still amazes me what this car is capable of: remarkably fast on the track, very comfortable on the street, can haul 4 people to go skiing in the winter... Yet even for all of its capabilities, sometimes it feels too good (lol) and lacks soul. Getting a little OT but that is why I would go with a GT3 (996 or 997), though it would not be the all around star that is the M3.

Sorry to bring up a old thread but I'm kind of in this dilemma now
I love the m3 but recenty I bought a exige s for track instead of making the m3 abit more track/street, now I don't really like driving the m3 as it's too comfortable and soft feeling. I know there totally different but I guess I do prefer cars to be hard and uncomfortable now my backs been ok So I was thinking of fitting bucket seats, club sport suspension and better brakes etc on the m3 sooner than planned so I would enjoy it again, however by the time it's done, cost wise its not far too from getting a 997.1 gt3( a year ago I would have definitely modified it but having spent crazy money in the pass I do like the idea of getting cars that only needs a hand ful of things or less now) I'd still keep the rear seats in the m3 so Itd still be practical. So what I want to know I guess is, will the m3 give the gt3 a run for it's money with the mods on track and will it give that much more raw feel im looking for or will it still be too soft? I know no one can answer this for me but just a few more opinions on this might help my decision. Thanks
