ESS G1 With Cold Off Throttle Backfire

As the topic states, I get off throttle pops when changing gears when the engine is cold. Not frozen, just cold after a night of not driving etc. When I roll out of my garage (I do not idle before driving) I notice I get some off throttle backfires when changing from 1st to 2nd. I am not "on it" at all - shifting at 3500 to 4000 max, usually sooner as it is a 30KPH zone in my neighbourhood.

Just wondering if anyone else has any cold backfires.

My ESS tune has cold start delete. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any comments on this.

Cheers,

I feel as though you are shifting the car too late when it’s that cold. Potentially the car is still running rich at that moment and allowing fuel to enter the exhaust and burn off, producing that sound

That is the max rpm it will see. It even does it if I shift sooner. Not as big an issue if I shift fast but a slow relaxed shift will often give one good pop.

My ESS 625 kit does the same. Nothing to worry about.

Yep. Freshly installed kit. It will backfire if you lightly rev it up then clutch in while it's warming up. ~4k RPM seems to be the sweet spot for it to do a big pop.
