Porsche. It's built from the ground up as a sports car. 3 series is too common.

You've got enough green to drop $80-90k on the 997 without "thinking it through". Whatever. The 997.2 is a much better car - and much more expensive. The M3 is fun and much more practical. If you're single with no obligations and now have $160k worth of cars, I couldn't care less what you do.
So given current pace, the next post regarding this would be due up in January? lol.

Yeah, if you have $160k to drop without even blinking, buy something worth $160k.

The porsche offers speed on demand more than the M3 does. Let's not forget the porsche's superior handling and gearbox as well.
I keep hearing superior handling...the handling of the 2 cars is not that far off. In some respects I actually liked the handling of the M3 over the 997S. It would take a pro driver to discern the difference between the 2 cars on a race track. The M3 feels more stable at speed, less twitchy and easier to drive fast. Yes the gearbox is better than the M3, well at least the shifter is better.

There is a lot of people on this board who has owned both and has come back to the M3. I for one drank the coolaid and was disappointed. Unfortunately didn't have the financial resources to dump the 997 and sold the car at lease end.

I felt my M3 would tear my 997S a new arse hole, yes the 3.8H6 has a better torque curve and the newer motor with the 997.2S is an improvement but still feels lethargic next to the S65 powerplant. IMHO the only reason why a 997.2S beats a properly driven E92 M3 is the M3s complete lack of traction.

I too think this is a pretty silly poll, but since you asked, I'd say M3. The only current Porsches that really interest me are the Turbo and Cayman R. I know some posters were flaming the guy about saying the lower end Carrera's not being that special, but I guess I have to agree. Also, I think the front-end of the 997 has just always looked odd - something about how the headlights integrate with the hood. The new 991 looks much more well styled.

The 997 was calling my name for a while. I love the small sporty feel, i mean look at the difference in size and height in the pics above... wow! However letting go of the m3 is much harder than i thought. I love the engine, and i love the sound of the performance exhaust. I love the fact that i can load all my music into the hard drive and all the other comfort/tech features that my porsche is lacking. Both drive amazingly well and at first i felt as though the m3 was the faster of the 2 but after running them against each other it's not even close. The porsche pulls on it pretty quickly and the steering/brake feel are far superior in the porsche.

Porsche Pros

Small, sporty, light, direct, surprisingly comfy
Super car fast, linear power delivery
throaty exhaust, amazing steering feel, spasm+ = amazing handling

Porsche Cons

A bit twitchy/nervous as you approach it's limits
exhaust is nice but nothing like the performance exhaust on my m3
Brakes have excellent feel but don't feel as safe as the m3
Not as high tech as my m3

m3 pros

High rpm fun, engine tone changes beautifully as you approach redline, Telepathic throttle response, snaps your neck more than the porsche, dual clutch feels less like an auto, superior technology (comfort access, idrive ect)

M3 cons

When i drive my m3 after the porsche i feel like im driving an x5.
high awkward seating position, big, heavy, light uncommunicative steering at slow speeds, very sensitive artificial feeling brakes

I suppose its the dct, v8 engine, and creature comforts in the m3 that is making it so difficult for me but i need to make a decision soon, can not keep both.
Well, the creature comforts obviously make the M3 the better every day car. But the extra fun the 911 provides makes it the perfect car when the roads are just right.

For the fun factor: 911
For the every day factor: M3

I'd keep the 911, personally. But that's just me. Or, as another member stated, sell both and wait for a 991 911 S.

I'd never get a Porsche that wasn't a 911 turbo/gt3/gt2. I find the standard porsches to be ugly, and the aforementioned above to look better but still find them a little fugly. However the realm of performance is massively different between the m3 and the 911GT's, and hence why id consider one. I just could never justify the price difference between a m3 and a 911s..

pretty bad timing on buying a 997. gonna take a bath selling it. better get it sold now or it will only hurt more as the 991's start hitting showroom floors. The 991S just did the same lap time as the 997.2 GT3 on the ring. maybe just sell both and get a new 991S.

as for comments on handling feeling the same? on what planet? there is a 500lb difference in weight and then rear bias of the 911. they couldn't be more different. yes M3 handles good. rotates well. forgiving as usual. but nothing like a porsche my friends. ever drive 3 friends on the track in M3? feel how sluggish it gets? thats M3 to a 997.1 C2S.

Dave the Porsche is significantly faster from a roll too. I ran em against each other and the Porsche pulls on the m pretty easily after 60. It's wierd sometimes I feel the m3 is the faster car but it's not. On the highway in third or fourth the Porsche feels a lot faster but at lower speeds the m feels like it picks up faster Unfortunately at this point in time I must get rid of one and even though I'm very attatched to my m3 I feel like its the one that must go. This is my fourth m3 and my first Porsche. I love the m3 but the Porsche is more fun to drive, steers and handles better. The sound system in the Porsche sux especially compared to enhanced stereo in my m, plus I'll be losing the extra refinement and quality materials in the m3. I really wish I can keep both, they are both amazing. Nissan gtr is out of the question, it ain't my style. I think I might keep the 997 and wait for the 991 and the f10 m5 and see which one to go for.

If tomorrow, the Porsche suddenly disappeared from you garage along with the debt attached to it, how would you feel?

If tomorrow, the M3 disappeared along with the debt attached to it, how would you feel.

The one you feel most relieved about not losing is the one you should keep.

Wow u just blew my mind.

Im trying to figure out a way to keep both, maybe give it to a family for a few days a week in exchange for a share of the payments. I just revved the m a few minutes ago and I just can not ring myself to letting it go. It's a beautiful beautiful car. The most beautiful bmw to date IMO.

+1

The Porsche is surprisingly comfortable even on long drives. I absolutely love the seats, they are very comfy and perfectly placed. Quite honestly I like them better than the awkwardly positioned fat seats in my m3. The ride is a bit harsh over bumps especially since it's equipped with 20mm lowered suspension but it's not by any means brutal and can be drown daily with no problems. I just wish the sound system and pdk transmission were a bit more like my m3's. I hate how the car moves when u let your foot off the brake.
