Looks very good! Are those the harnesses you told me about in a PM? Where I can amp the in-car speakers without having to rewire everything (i.e.: connecting to existing speaker wire?). If so, where can I get em?

The OEM amp harness pictured is a pre-production sample; the connector is 99% correct, the wires and cables are custom for this application. Production models will be generic (RCA cables, Relay and speaker wires labeled and unterminated).
The OEM speaker connectors are P/N 61 13 8 373 583. The wires and pins (already crimped) that can be used with these connectors are P/N 61 13 0 005 198. |

Also, did you end up getting the Vanadiums to fit? That's what I'll be using if I can find an installer in the Pacific NW that doesn't want to charge me $5000 for install alone. |

I made that adapter. The Vanadiums are listed as having a 46mm mounting depth and the Esotar in the picture has a 42mm mounting depth. According to Technic's info, it would be too deep but it would be hard to say for sure without actually trying.

I have never understood why people are so concerned with aftermarket tweeters fitting into the existing brackets (snap-in). Bottom line is this: If it doesn't fit, just get the dremel and the hot glue gun and MAKE it fit. There is plenty of room for most tweeters and there is nothing you can screw up back there. In the worst case you'll have to remove all the OEM clips and when you sell the car, you'll have to hot glue the OEM tweeter back in there. Is anyone going to look behind the sail panel, ever?

Light tweeters can usually be held in place with glue of some sort, but those 6020-family tweeters are freaking heavy, and a dab of glue ain't gonna do it. You need a really good custom molded support for them, I believe. It's a really nice tweeter, but if the rest of the system isn't insane, it's kinda overkill. ________ volcano vaporizer digital Last edited by VP Electricity; 01-19-2011 at 04:22 AM.. |

Good call. I didn't notice that the model number was the deeper version.

Then the D3004/6020 might be a better selection, with a mounting depth of 21mm versus the MT-23 20mm, and 61.9mm cutout diameter versus the 50mm of the Morel MT-23?
Didn't you mount an MT-23 in that location? And matched with a top mounted ScanSpeak 12m/4631, you might actually have something that isn't totally insane, but a nice $800 2 way component speaker setup (assuming it was actively managed, by, say an MS-8). Throw in an BMW Individual Audio center coax, maybe 2 more IA coaxes in the back, something under the seats, add an amp (maybe a pair of ARC Mini KS 125.4), and you might be sitting pretty.

I have the Hybrid Ovation II 4" mounted at both the front door and rear panels. The front door clearance was a bit tricky. I had to use the Morel supplied grill and mounting clips. The trick is to mount the clips backwards so the speakers would be pushed further out.
I wish I would have kept the stock grills because they do look better, but did not use them because I looked at the woofers under peak load and the Xmax seemed like it would hit the grill. |

Nice to see Don's work up here! The first pic is the esotar 110 tweeter in the stock 4" mid spot, and the second shows the earlier iteration of the system where an esotar 430 4" mid was put in there. Yes, those are 808MGuy's awesome speaker rings! I actually gave those to Don to use for this install, and they work perfectly with the esotar 110 tweeter as well. That is also the Jehnert door pod fitted with two esotar 650s and the esotar 430. 4 Esotars per door!
I never got a chance to listen to the system, but the exact same setup is going into my car soon so will post some more pics when I am able to get everything setup |
