engine temps

anyone else running hot??? it was 100 over here yesterday, took the M to work that day, on my way home had the ac on, temps rose to between 220 and 230, is that normal. normally the cars temp runs in the low 200's.

yeah its running a little hotter, then again it's 114 where I live.

That's normal on a hot day. You have nothing to worry about. If it gets above 250, then you could start worrying. I went to Las Vegas driving 100+ with 115 degrees and the a/c on full blast. The temp only got to 230 max.

cool just wondering. shoot i when i drive my truck in 115 degree temps with the ac full blast, the temp wouldnt even move. none of my other cars ever did this before. i was just watching the temp go up and i was like

I was just down in the desert and it was 118 outside, I just try to shift at lower rpms to keep the car a little colder.

Was about 95 this afternoon, temp stayed fairly normal (needle dead center on the oil temp gauge) with the AC rocking. Might go into the mountains tomorrow, we'll see what happens then.

Coolant temperature gauges are buffered on cars, that's why they don't move. They stay the same from 190º to about 230º. You can imagine the complaints if they represented true coolant temperature, like most motorcycles (needle close to redline when fan engages). Thermostats open at 190º, so temp stays there in cool weather, but fans kick in around 220/225º (unless you turn A/C on), so you have quite a bit of temperature variation, but you don't see that on the gauge.
Oil temperature gauges are not buffered as they're only present in sports cars, where their owners know better .
