BMW Nitrogen filled tires
I did a quick search and didn't find anything so this shouldn't be a repost. I got an email from my BMW dealer about Nitrogen tires for $39.95 for all 4 tires. Has anyone else heard about this or is considering it? I copied the email below:
Nitrogen filled tires will last longer, provide increased safety, offer better fuel efficiency, and reduced operating costs. Maintain proper inflation pressure longer: Tires inflated with compressed air lose 2 psi/month. It takes up to 6 months or more for the same loss with nitrogen filled tires. Nitrogen does not react to temperature changes: Even during extreme temperatures, tires remain consitently filled, stopping the tire pressure monitor light from coming on unnessesarily. Improve fuel efficiency: Properly inflated tires provide a 3.3% increase in miles/gallon. Longer tire life: By maintaining proper inflation pressure and minimizing tire aging, tire life improves by up to 25%. Eliminate chemical aging of the tire: As oxygen and water vapor permeate through the side wall, the rubber degrades, causing the tire to deteriorate. Nitrogen is inert, halts the chemical aging of the tire, and prolongs tire quality. Nitrogen is very dry (-50°F dewpoint): Nitrogen eliminates condensation and rim corrosion, and will allow tires to run cooler and provide a safer ride. Maximize safety: Cooler rolling temperatures minimize autoignition and catastrophic blowouts, providing a safer ride. Increase retreadability: As nitrogen minimizes the oxidation of the rubber, the tire retains its original quality longer, providing more retreads/casing. |

Although I'm sure its good, what a waste of $$. First of all, you'll wear out your tires before the wear out bc regular air was in them, second of all, you can go get air for free, even though you may have to fill it up 1 time more.
In this economy, whoever came up with that marketing plan to get $39.99 is an idiot. That money can be spent in a much better way than nitrogen. LMAO |

Nitrogen is becoming more and more popular....
Some of the benefits are tires that run cooler and thus wear less The cooler tires thus have a positive effect on MPG In the long run they are supposed to last longer. Most aviation tires are filled with nitrogen for the above reasons...... Jason

Mostly hype. All the benefits they claim come from maintaining proper air pressures regardless of the "kind" of air.
I do however run nitrogen in mine. Nitrogen is more stable with changes in temperature. So, since I autocross, I see much less pressure gain when the tires get hot. The problem I used to have was that after a run or two on the "track", I'd have to bleed off the excess pressure. Once cool (as in the drive home), the pressures would be too low and set off the warning lights. Nitrogen simply keeps me from stopping at a filling station to fill them back up. btw; I put together my nitrogen kit from a local gas supplier for less than $200 (bottle, manifold, and hose line). |

Essentially you'll be giving a $39 "donation" to the service department. This is obviously a high-profit service (like interior protection cons) and repeated refills will eventually cost more than you'd possibly save over the lifetime of the tires.

air is about 70% nitrogen anyway isn't it? The claimed benefit to nitrogen is there is no water vapor in it. Therefore tire pressure is supposed to stay more consistent as tires heat up and cool down. I can't see how it keeps them cooler since regular is is mostly nitrogen to begin with?

I had nitrogen filled tires on my STI for more than 2 years and could go 3-4 months without ever checking my tire pressure and it would still be the same as it was previously. My Subaru dealer would always fill my tires up for free with nitrogen, it's good stuff and definitely worth having but the $39 price tag is a load of BS.

Say what you will about using strictly Nitrogen, its proven...used throughout the aviation community...

It's only good for racecars because the tires get so hot on the track. You don't want the tire pressure to change to much as the tires get hot. The fact that there is no water vapor in pure nitrogen helps keep the pressure change to a minimum. Good for a racetrack but it's a joke for the street, especially if they want to charge you for it.

I think this board is full of bull-shitters who like to put their two cents worth for the sake of it.
It's proven that nitrogen is getting popular. If someone wants to pay and get nitrogen filled it's their call because it's their hard earned money. If you don't want to pay for nitrogen then go and fill it with free air. Don't mock what others want to do. Go and start a new board, "How to spend your money".

Our local tire depots do "lifetime" nitrogen for $12.95, you can come back any time and they'll run the same "deflate / inflate 3 times" sequence on your car to get them back to optimum conditions.

That being said, I only use 78% nitrogen in my tires. Doesn't cost me anything. I don't suffer any performance issues, my tires don't rot. I never have a problem with tire pressure monitor coming on, I always keep my tires properly inflated. It's the proper inflation that achieves maximum fuel efficiency no matter what gas is in your tires. I drive my car on the street and have yet to see a single reason why paying for nitrogen would be beneficial for me??
