I had a frs 6mt and I still miss that car. I loved the 6mt and I can do perfect heel toes in that car. Anyways congrats on the e90, I traded my frs for a e90 m3 6mt as well!

Good thread, fun to read. And that pic is awesome!
I am now at 1300 miles on a new E92 with DCT after owning nothing but manual shift cars my entire life (well, the wife's have been auto's....). My verdict on DCT vs MT? Well, sorry to disappoint, but....I cannot pick....even now.... It's hard to compete with the DCT after the car is moving. It's freaking flawless. However, I'm still missing my clutch!!! Sorry, but the DCT has not figured out how the replace the human input on the clutch off the line in day to day driving. The manual clutch provides too much fine control. I'm not sure I would even prefer DCT in rush hour traffic (well, maybe...). They need to figure out someway to incorporate a clutch pedal with a DCT. Come one, it's all 'drive by wire'....how hard can that be? |

Raced anyone in the 6mt yet?
The DCT is a no brainer in D5 just crush the pedal and win. With the 6mt you always stand the chance of missing a shift, human error, etc etc ...All my past cars were manuals, from a SRT4, GTO, 350z, to a Corvette that I supercharged with Meth w/700hp. Corvette had a manual that I hated the 1 to 2 on it ...lost a couple of easy races with that crap...I do miss the hands on feeling of my manual sometimes, but not in traffic and not in races.. |

what bothered you about the GT86? was it the lack of power around town? naturally its not a good choice if you wanted a sedan anyways. just curious on your experience with it.

You made a wise choice and great color. Manual is the way to go. Leave the automatics for the folks that don't know how to drive a true manual.

For the 6MT guys... What shift knob do you recommend? After this SSK went on the knob is bothering me when I shift to 2nd.
I've heard the new M5 one is good, any other recommendations?

I have the M5 shift knob, Absolutely loving it, one of the best mods I have done to my car (I would say after the OEM Exhaust mod, this is the best mod any M3 driver should consider)

There is no need for that for new owners or people who bought the car from someone who can shift. If you bought a used car and have pbs getting into 2nd (it should be smooth as butter) then the previous owner did not know how to shift and prematurely worn the synchros. You can drive a MT for many years with poor shifting technique. A shorter stick, beside reducing hand travel will reduce leverage force which can be applied to an already worn synchro which help catching and getting the gear in. But less hand travel also mean less separation when selecting gears.

I have driven manuals for 20 + years. This is the first car that I bought without a manual. I always bought the manual why? Because it was faster than the automatic. In the M world it is not. There is no logical reason to pass up a modification like the DCT and own the slower of the two M cars. Don't listen to these guys, they don't race their cars at the track nor on the street. The first race you lose to a friend that has a DCT you will hate the MT. The first traffic jam, you will be rowing those gears and putting in that clutch every two seconds for what? To be slower? You will hate the extra work and the fact that you are slower, this will eat you up and you wont be able to sleep at night..LOL The DCT is an advancement in technology, MT is old school and slower. MT quarter mile times: 12.8 with a professional driver or someone who practices all the time. 13.0 + seconds is the typical time for forum, wanna be racer, MT drones. The DCT modification gets you 12.5 to 12.6 every time!!! This is Corvette territory so you can now race (non zo6) Vettes!! Its also a modification that some of the best and fastest sports cars have in the world: Aventador, Enzo, GTR, Pagani Huayra, Bugatti Veyron - to name just a few supercars...... Drake, cool ride! Do you live in Toluca Lake? I think I spotted your car on Forman today. I live right around the corner. We met a couple of years ago at Bullrun 2012 (I was in the white E90 with the Europlates). Let me know if you're interested in meeting up for Cars and Coffee, Supercar Sunday etc. It'd be cool to check out your ride.
