Flashing DME twice?

Hey guys,

So we flashed my friends E90 M3 with a performance tune...

But my friend wanted to re-flash to make sure everything was done properly again..

Is there any issue flashing the DME twice with the same file?

It won't hurt. Someone like Mike Benvo can enlighten you further. He's an expert on everything ECU.

No problem flashing again, you can flash as many times as you like. Mine has probably been flashed 500 times

Why do some say the ECU will be ruined if it is flashed more than a certain number of times?

I've read that BMW limits rewrites to 13iirc. I know on all the BMW's I've written to, they were limited. But I've never messed with dme's past 04. Bassically Ibus cars only.
When writing, the software actually tells you how many rewrites are left. I just put a euro e39 tune on my e38 and winkfp said I had 10 writes left.
Are the newer cars different?

Thanks alot Mike! You are Def the guru to these engines.

I wasn't sure if i had to flash to stock again and then flash the tune...

We flashed the tune file, my friend just wanted to re-flash to make sure he did it properly.

I am sure there was s restriction on the E46 M3s. You could flash only so many times.

That's a limit to the UIF (universal identification field) - which is a byte space that doesn't necessarily need to be written. It's simply a registry of flashed versions. You can flash even when that gets to 0.

Regardless, flashing with our cable will not modify that field or decrement that counter at all. E46s and E39s do have a flash limit of roughly 60 flashes but this can be defeated.
