Test drove a 2012 c63 AMG yesterday

So.. was randomly out yesterday, beautiful day as I rolled past the MB dealership I saw quite a few c63s sitting outside so I decided to see what all the fuss is about. Honestly, was a bit underwhelmed but maybe that is because the car is talked about so much on here.

I love the exhaust note, it sounds great however I still like my exhaust note with the Akra/Dinan Mid pipe more, then again that isn't a fair comparison. So stock for stock, I'd give the c63 the nod. I will say the interior is nice, more modern and the seats although a bit weird I liked.

Looks wise, e92 m3 all day for me but that is largely a subjective thing. Performance wise, the M3 is definitely the better handler and the chassis is just so much tighter. I also prefer the M3's steering feel. I didn't mind the C63s single clutch set up, but the DCT is superior.

As for what everyone raves about.. the brutish engine. Yeah I like the torque, its nice but the car didn't feel faster than my M3(all I have is full exhaust). I do realize it responds great to mods, but once again if you wanted a brutish sports car.. I'd have gotten a z06.

I dunno, overall it is a great car. But the M3 is just much more exhilarating and better put together. You really feel like you're driving a sports car with the M3, it is a fine symphony, the c63 just feels like MB dropped a big ass engine in it and were like off you go. I will say, that the C63 would definitely be the more comfortable DD. But then again, I didn't buy a M3 because I wanted a comfortable DD.

It's fuckin' ugly, apes the not so pretty Honda Accord coupe design, handles like a pig with some lipstick on, steers like a boat, and has tacky styling especially on the interior.

I think you'd be nuts to get a C63 unless you'd already owned a M3 for several years and were tired of it and wanted to stay in the 50-60K car range.

There is some guy on here that bought a C63 and keeps posting here about the car for whatever reason. He provides a counterpoint because for some reason he likes it, I guess because he bought it. The best anyone can seem to do is to say that "it's a better daily driver," but who gives a fuck, so is a Lincoln Towncar.

Fact is the M3 is quite the bargain in its class and you need to spend another 20-30K+ to get something better.
I agree. I priced one out... 70k+ with the performance package. I'd rather just get a used GTR if the only the only thing the c63 has on the M3 is straight line power. The M3 really is just such a great car all around, its insane how BMW does it. It's an engineering marvel, yet is full of soul.

Oh, I also checked out the new 911. I have to say... much better looking than its predecessors. I've always found Porsches fugly, but the new 911 is more handsome than its ancestors.

Only 2 things impressed me on the C63
Seats and engine sound
The seats on the M3 always hurt my back
Whether you use the inflatable lumber support or not
The actually mechanism inside the seat starts to hurt my back after 20 minutes
And the engine sound on the C63 is amazing

Having had a 2009 C63 for three years I prefer the M3 but I enjoyed the hell out of the C63. I like the high revving S65 and the M-DCT and the handling of the M3 more but it's still pretty close with these cars. For me it's more like 53%M3/47%C63.

I don't think even the base 911 will be in the M3's price range.

You can't lose with either car. If track and turning is important, the M3 is a no-brainer. Otherwise its a toss up.

I drove the C63 MB, cayman R, GT 500 and Corvette Z06 before purchasing my 2011 M3 w/ competition package. All were fun to drive and amazing to slide into a turn, but they did just that (SLID INTO THE TURN). The simple fact is that the torque on the other cars is damn fun but the balance of power and handling just isn't there. The closest was the porsche, but who can drive that thing every day. Im only 29 years old and my knees hurt from getting in that thing. Not to mention the suspension is stuck in teeth chattering stiff all the time. Pair that with back wrenching seats and I say no thanks porsche. Best all around daily driver, track car and road trip transportation. There is no other like the M3.

I'm curious why everyone says the "handling" on the M3 is better? On the track, yes, I'd agree. But on the road, commuting back and forth, does "handling" really come into play that often?

Since I drive both the C63 sedan and an M3 coupe, I just think the handling comment is a bit overused.

For those who have not driven a C63, it does handle quite well. Chuck it into an off ramp and you'll be surprised at the grip/composure.

Both fun cars, but not as different as the masses would have you think.

I know that there has been a lot of talk about the best exhaust. Does anyone know which exhaust setup is the loudest and has the deepest growl, when heard in person. Its hard to tell from youtube videos and such. Anyone with real world experience of the different exhaust setups would be appreciated. Thanks

Agreed, for a DD i dont see why the M3 is so much more superior. The capabilities of the M3 cant be shown on regular off ramps and streets. Im sure in these circumstances the C63 can handle just as well if not close on the STREETS. Not to mention BENZ is getting closer and closer every year in the handling department.

i think its just a matter of feeling - on the every day ride you still have the characteristics of the car - meaning, the M3 still feels tactile and more like a sniper rifle and the C63 still feels like a .50 cal machine gun.

I love the new 911, but unfortunately, it's a different class and price range when compared to the M3.

I wish you could get a nice GTR for 70K....

I don't know. Perhaps I had a lemon c63AMG? I will say the c63 handled better than I expected. But it really isn't close to the M3. The M3 feels like a sports car, the AMG does not. Maybe its the tires on the c63? I really just think its the chassis I think the e9x m3 chassis owns the c63s. I like to take turns fairly aggressively.. so yes day to day it would make a difference for me.

Yeah, I like the way it feels as it goes about its business. I come from a car with more grip (Z06) but less feel. For me its not about the ultimate numbers, its about how I enjoy the drive day in and day out.

I test drove most of the cars mentioned here but I am surprised to see what I thought was possibly one of the M3s closest competitors not mentioned at all. That would be the CTS-V, a car I really liked on my test drive. I was not able to find a manual on the ground but if I had and I liked it I would have purchased that car over the M3 easily. I could only sample the auto though which I felt was a pretty poor trans for the car (or trans period for that matter) and not a setup I would purchase.

I've seen better and still don't consider them "good"

damn GTR went up in value instead of down..

But I thought we were talking about new cars anyways lol

Back in 09, people were getting new GTRs in the 70s.
Lucky bastards lol

The C63 feels like a luxury car that was modified for racing (luxury car with race setting). The M3 is like a race car modified for luxury(Race car with a luxury setting).

Why would he come here to the M3 fanboy thread?... I believe the M3 is a superior car in every way but everyone has their own opinion, needs and wants out of a car. That does not mean a C63 is shit... it is just not the car for me but if it is the car for someone else, I am just glad they got the car they wanted.

Sincerely don't want to be a wise ass here, but this tells me you've never been in a race car.

Having come from a GTR to the M3, my overwhelming impression is a genuine amazement at just how comfortable the M3 is. It provides near Cadillac levels of comfort.

As well, having fun with a GT3 on the track...is what a "race car modified for luxury" really is.

I would never classify the M3 as a race car, or even something close to it.

I've had the M3 for 1000 miles now and really like it...but it's not a race car.
