The government is executing exactly that with this strategy, and it makes sense, they are protecting their investments.

when they start throwing taxes on our beloved cars at the rate of thousands of dollars more on the list price let me know how you feel.
Basically how people outside do when they want to purchase a beloved M3, much more mula, it's going to catch up in the US, cars are just too inexpensive in comparison and someone sees it as a way to dive in the extra cash. The enthusiasts will be the victims here and all this is just the excuse needed.

"Obama’s EPA is not just mandating 56 mpg by 2025 — effectively creating a standard only hybrid electrics can meet — but putting in place harsh fines for companies that make engines they don’t like."

Sounds pretty straighforward to me; no dot-connecting there. After all the global warming research has been thouroghly discredited and its top scientists revealed as frauds, automakers are targeted by a "green" agenda that has no basis scientifically. Eesh.

I enjoy parking close to hybrids to remind them how much more fun I'm having.

This particular mandate actually hasn't been made law. It's a goal, but that's it. Also, why is 56mpg so hard? There are already a bunch of cars sold right now that aren't hybrids that can do better than 56mpg. And this goal is 14 years from now! Is it that unlikely that engineers won't be able to squeeze more performance out of the internal combustion engine? Sounds like the BS that was being spewed back when the catalytic converter was being made mandatory.

It's hard beause it's not a free market that's driving it, but a government agenda that's arbitrary and, again, not based on science. This is why others can validely criticize the US for not being "free," because federal government gets more intrusive every year. BMW won't bring awesome cars like the GTR or the CTR to the US market because they have to spec them to US regulatory standards, which is the real BS.

Secondly, look at the thriving market in cat-delete exhausts. No further comment.

This makes me think that the one good thing about this happening is that it may make our V8 M3 more desirable since you wont be able to get one anymore and thus, make for a higher potential resale value. Dont you guys think?

People are going to want to own the 1 V8 M3 model.
