BMW defective wheel lawsuit
Just ran across this, anyone heard about it?
Defective BMW Wheels December 13, 2010 Finkelstein Thompson LLP Announces Investigation of Defective BMW Wheels Finkelstein Thompson is investigating allegations that BMW-manufactured alloy wheels are improperly designed and manufactured. The allegations claim that the alloy used to make the wheels is susceptible to cracking and bending under normal driving conditions. It has also been claimed that the problem is exacerbated by BMW's use of run-flat or low profile tires, which come standard on many models. Repair or replacement costs borne as a result of these cracked or bent rims may not be covered by BMW's warranty, and replacing or repairing a defective wheel typically costs several hundred dollars. If you are interested in discussing your rights as a purchaser of any BMW series vehicle manufactured from 2005 to the present, excluding the 6-series, or have information relating to this investigation, please contact Finkelstein Thompson's Washington, DC offices at (877) 337-1050 or by email at contact@finkelsteinthompson.com. http://www.finkelsteinthompson.com/i...bmw_wheels.php |

A similar lawsuit has already resulted in a settlement of some sort for the 6 series "ellipsoid" wheels. Saw a sign discussing the settlement at the counter of the parts department the last time I was at my dealer...

You may have seen my posts in the Z forum, I had (2) two BMW Z cars in the past 1 1/2 years the 2009 Z4 3.5i twin turbo, a nice car, however the wheels let me down. After 1800 KM ~ 1,118 miles 2 of my rear wheels cracked. The wheels were 19" and yes with RFT never again will I run on a RFT and soft alloy wheels. What a nightmare. Some wheels may be okay the Style 296 presented issues.

This is a normal thing. When I go in my dealer during winter time to have my rims replaced, im not the only one. the lots full of cars with busted tires and spider cracked rims. The rims are designed to absorb the shock and take the damage instead of the suspension and other vital parts that are harder to replace.
this is why we have wheel and tire insurance.

One of my wheels has excessive runout since new, and that's why I have a mild shimmy sometimes. And I believe that's the reason for the shimmies in many other M3s, some a lot more severe than mine. But that condition doesn't seem to be included in the lawsuit .
