Test drive question

So I am planning on my next car being an E90 and am looking to test drive a few at a local dealer. How picky are dealers going to be if I just want to drive a DCT and a 6MT car to see which I prefer? The problem is I don't have any plan to buy for a couple more years. They have one used E92 with the DCT and one with the 6MT. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hopefully this won't turn into a 6MT vs. DCT battle.....

If you're serious about buying it and the salesman senses that, I don't see why they wouldnt accommodate your request to test drive both.

When I bought my 535, I was torn between auto and 6mt, the salesman knew I was going to buy one from him so he didn't care to spend his time and let me drive both back to back 3 times each. I was so indecisive because both were nice.

If u go in there telling them ur not buying for a few years, I'm pretty sure they gonna be reluctant to spend time with you.

I think the harder part may be finding a dealer with both on their lots.

Surprisingly the local dealer has two 2010s, one of each. They are both coupes but I'm more concerned with which transmission I prefer.

Obviously, you still have plenty of time before you pull the trigger. I would actually recommend finding someone who has one instead of wasting the dealer's time. In fact, I'm pretty sure you would be wasting your time once you tell them that you DO NOT plan on purchasing one within the next couple of years.

If both cars are used, I don't see why a dealer would have a problem with you driving each.

But if you're not buying for a couple of years, best not to waste the dealer's time.

If you are going to be looking at used cars in a couple of years I wouldn't waste the dealers time. Since the car you would be buying will be out of warranty or close to it, I would go with the 6MT. I assume you know that the E90 production has ended for the M cars.

Getting a little ahead of yourself eh? In a few years you may not even want an M3 anymore...

Agree with what everyone has said - if you are serious about buying used now and the dealer has both types of trans I don't see why they wouldn't let you drive them; however, if you are not buying a car now then don't waste their time.

to be honest, some dealers may be hesitant if you're not serious about buying it that week.

The best way to test drive it and really drive the crap out of the car is to get your dealer to sign you up for the M Power Tour in the fall.

The first dealership I went to the guy turned into a dick when I told him I was not going to buy that same day. Him: "are you gonna buy this car in the next 5 minutes ?" Me: "uh, I just met you like 2 minutes ago, can I think about it ?" Him: "well this is my busy day, don't really have time for this" Me: "OK". Bought from a different dealer the next week.

Test drive when you're ready to buy. In two years you might change your mind about wanting an M3.

Your age may also be a factor as to whether they'll let you test drive something. Many dealers look down on younger drivers and think they're just looking for a joy ride.

wow seriously? People always live in the current and don't think about the future. Apparantly, he's got enough business that day so that he doesn't want your business in the future? I would have begged for you to come back the following day when I had more time. Idiot.

This. I drove multiple M3s multiple times before buying.
