Winter Tire help...

This question is mostly geared towards my Midwest brethren, not sure if it belongs in the "regional" section....

When do you plan on removing the winter tires from your M3?? I'm SO close to buying my dream car, but am waiting until it gets just a bit warmer outside. I don't want to have to buy winter tires to just use them for a few weeks. My cars have always been AWD wearing all-season tires, so I don't have any experience with the winter/summer swap.

Given the unseasonably warm winter we've been having, I was thinking anytime after March 1st I'd be in the clear.

There is a used M3 I've already located and plan to purchase...

So...when do you think I'll be okay to buy? March 1st? Late March?

I did look there...seems to mostly be posts like: "do you like these rims"..."how much did you pay for XYZ"..."will these fit on my car"...

Agree. End of March is when I usually take them off.

Although with this uncommonly mild winter, you never know. I heard the weatherman mention on the news the other day that the biggest single snowfall we've ever had here in SE Michigan actually came in April. Who knows, we might be in for something like that this year. Probably not though.

I'm not in your region (I am in NJ), but I was also thinking about swapping my snows out towards the end of March or early April.

The temperature recommended is 45 to 50 Degree F. (7 C to 10 C)

Thanks Peter, great info.

I had heard that 45 degrees was sort of the "cut off" for summer tires. According to Weather.com, the average temp in Chicago should hit that around mid-March. With the balmy winter though, it should hopefully be a bit sooner than that.

As far as I know the units of temperature have not changed for quite some time. So when people (and the tire manufacturers) say to change around 50 F, that likely holds whether it's 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012.

I'm picking up on your sarcasm...

What I was trying to determine was when people on the forum thought it would be consistently warm enough this year.

Whats the deal with people that get butt hurt when you ask a question? Instead of answering the question they respond with "use the search button". The time you wasted responding with that you could have just as easily answered the question.

Once the temperature is consistently above 50F, you can switch to summer tires. However, since you are in Chicago, I would highly recommend a dedicated winter set. TireRack has very inexpensive packages.

I'll definitely be buying a dedicated winter set, just don't want to have to spend the money on it right after shelling out so much for the car itself.

I've seen too many asshats around here in the winter that keep their summer tires on and get absolutely nowhere when there is snow on the road

Predicting the weather is more voodoo than science this year. It's been very mild, but you never know what could drop on us. I would figure end of March is usually safe. Even if you get a fluke late snow, it usually won't stick.

Drive with caution even if it is just cold though. Below 40-45 degrees the summer tires do not grip as well.
