Chris Harris Ferrari Ban
Even though I have read through the forum countless times, this is my first post. The reason I am posting is to divulge Chris Harris' recently published Ferrari article. I think everyone should consider these facts next time they watch an episode of TG or Final Gear (or whatever magazine article) featuring Ferrari. This is truly disgraceful on their part (Ferrari), I am a huge Ferrari fan, as are most on this forum, however the truth needs to be known about their shady PR practices.
Here is the link to Chris' article: http://jalopnik.com/5760248/how-ferrari-spins There is also a video where he briefly mentions that he has been banned from driving Ferraris. To Mods: Please move thread to appropriate location if necessary. Last edited by Bigiggs; 11-07-2011 at 09:42 PM.. |

I hate to say it but I'm sure some other automakers are doing this as well. Not to this degree though. This brings new meaning to "control freak." Interesting read.

Did you get a chance to read the article?
This article could possibly refute most Ferrari reviews conducted in the past. Chris Harris does not specify when this practice begun, however it puts a big blemish on Ferrari I would say. I am a little disappointed at the integrity of some of these automotive journalist. I have never had the opportunity to drive a Ferrari, and who knows if I ever will, I therefore rely on candid reviews to reach this goal and when these reviews are rigged by certain auto companies it strikes me as unfair. |

what is the surprise? That is business and marketing. The higher end companies need to keep their edge and the fact is technology is so good and so diverse among companies that it no longer is enough to simply engineer the "best" car because there are so many bests.
Same with something like the m3. You now hyndai's and all sorts of thinking putting out near same power and quality driving as many of m3's competitors etc. Gotta do what you gotta do to keep the marketing going if they want to get the premium price they are used to. |

Not many people will be able to own a Ferrari. Everybody isn't rich, unfortunately, so this really doesn't matter to some. It is a repost, however.

Good link and article. I think it absolutely belongs in the main section of m3post.com. There are a lot of enthusiasts here, many lust after and respect Ferrari, myself included. Many of us cite magazine figures and also debate potential factory ringers and under/overrating by OEMs.
Right on for Chris telling it like it is.

pretty common practice everywhere. getting engineers out to a track to prepare a car is an insane advantage over a customers car. same reason why the mp4-12c destroyed the ferrari 458 on top gear, and why the boss 302 ls test car was so fast at laguna. both cars were tested and developed at those tracks.

Actually, a Ferrari owner can play this well and when they wanted to do a track day, they'd call Ferrari and claim that they're going to be testing their car for a magazine, and Ferrari will send their engineer out to setup the car. |

I think all of the auto makers do this to some degree. It's just that Ferrari probably allocates the most amount of money to send its boffins out ahead of the tests.

No it isn't, it's could almost be considered as Communism, I can't think of another product who tries to control a group test to this extent. Where does any manufacturer have the right to dictate to a paying customer, who they allow their product to be used by. Good for Chris Harris for making a stand

For the record, I would like to express my respect for Chris Harris. This article was more than a rant. He made a serious personal sacrifice to write something that he felt passionately about bringing to light. To be a journalist and risk putting oneself on Ferrari's black list for future reviews is nothing to take lightly. If Ferrari has any wisdom at all, they'll take this opportunity to take the high road and allow Chris Harris continued access in the spirit of being better than just a petty and controlling manufacturer.
