It was essentially cold turkey for me. The thing that helped the most was to stop going out to bars with smoker friends. The combination of drinking and having the temptation so close and frequent was a bad idea. Once I passed a certain threshold, I had no difficulty going out with them and not wanting a smoke.

That's how I've quit every time, but this last time was permanent. It's been four years now. I've quit for a few months or a year here and there, but I don't think I'm going back. I see no reason to.

Hey everyone,

I do not smoke but was always curious to hear the perspectives of those who have on a consistent basis. Besides the fact that the addiction is there, do you ever just look in the mirror and see the cosmetic side effects that smoking has? For those who are single looking to attract someone, having smoke breath, yellow teeth, etc. wouldn't that be enough to quit? I have a friend that dips at least a tin a day, and I have seen the bottom portion of his jaw and his teeth are yellow, crusty, and to be honest, disgusting (he is 25). His dentist has mentioned on multiple occassions that hes gonna be screwed if he continues the habit. Nonetheless, I was curious to see y'alls input on this.

Holy shit. I have never smoked, and I had no idea it was as bad as this to quit. I feel bad for all the shit I've given my friends for not being able to quit. Collin, keep it up. My dad used to smoke and it took lip and tongue cancer to finally get him to stop!

A friend of mine did some laser treatment that she said worked. Don't know if you have looked into that?

It effects everyone differently, but I didn't have anything close to that experience. You do have to admit that it pretty much zeroes out your want for nicotine though.

It's as if you have never smoked before and have absolutely no interest in it whatsoever.

I am back to smoking again if people didn't know.

I am planning on quitting again, but the new girl smokes and it seems like something that should be a joint effort. Otherwise, spending 5 days a week with someone who is smoking while I am trying to quit is counter-productive.

It's tough to do but it can be done. For me it was a mental thing. I quit cold turkey Memorial Day 2004, no drugs, no fake cigs, just willpower. It was hard, really hard, especially the first few days. Just like TGoTJ, I tried one cigarette a few days later and it tasted nasty. Haven't smoked one since.

A lot of my buddies used the e-cig to quit, and it worked. They kept lowering the dose of the nicotine and eventually quit after a month.

problem with ecigs are it's nicotine replacement. nicotine replacement is a sure fire way to set yourself up for failure. plus, by smoking an ecig, you're still going thru the smoking ritual. the key to quitting for good is to stop doing everything, otherwise you're just gonna relapse.

When I quit a few years ago, I did it alone and went cold turkey. I guess it also helps if you have a couple of others trying to quit at the same time. Guess that's why it was easy for my buddies to do it with the e-cig.

I don't have any success stories, currently trying to quit again. (I made it almost two years until I backslid during my bachelor party). But I will say that the hardest part was and is the fact that the majority of my friends will smoke when we're out at the bars. Some of them only smoke socially, but the fact that they do make it incredibly hard to quit. When I was on my 2 year break, I'd usually remove myself from the situation if people started lighting up (go inside).

And what Ghost of Tom Joad said - don't throw away progress because you had a smoke. Or a weekend's worth of smoking. Next time you quit will be harder than the current try.

Dude, good luck. The most effective method I've seen, and used plenty, was to minimize contact with smokers and smoking situations. It's easy as pie to quit when you can do that.

However, if you've got your significant other smoking all the time... Yeah... Good luck man. I hope you're successful, I really do, but it's going to be a million times harder if you're around smokers all the time, especially in social situations.

Best of luck, its probably the single best thing you can do for yourself.

I quit in 2006 and it was pretty damn tough, I used the patch, the withdrawal for me was really tough. I think you can do it though and once you break free you will stay free from it.

Quitting is ridiculously hard. I've tried time and time again, but the fact that almost all my friends smoke makes it difficult to quit and hang out with them. I came to the conclusion I don't have the will power to do it, but instead will smoke in moderation as a stepping stone.

Kudos to those who went cold turkey.
