how much will the 2008 M3 be in 2012-13?

Hey guys,

like many people, I someday dream to drive an M3. I just graduated from college a few months ago and am currently looking for an entry level job. Anyway, assuming I find a stable job in this bad economy, I hope that in a few years, I can afford $25,000-$35,000 to spend on a car (with financing). I was wondering how much would a 2008 M3 be in 2013, which would be about 4 years of working starting now. I would like to buy one with many options such as alarm, ipod connector, satellite radio, bluetooth, but I want it to be a manual gearbox and not a SMG. The reason why I am interested in the 2008 model is because it had iDrive unlike the earlier M3 models.

Any good speculations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on the condition, mileage, options......I'd guess that an '08 M3 would be at an average price of $35-40k'ish?

I'm 100% sure you'll get it at your budget if your plans go accordingly.

The '08 has iDrive. In 2009 BMW gave the M3 a revised version of iDrive that is easier to use. Most people seem to prefer the '09 version of iDrive over the previous generation.

they both have idrive (08 + 09), but 09s is nicer looking and easier to use. I have 08, it does the job but it would be nice to have the 09 Controller and system.

It does have iDrive, but the one that you really want is the 2009 version of the iDrive if you are getting an M3 in 2012-13. The difference in resale value between both years probably will not be more than $3000-$5000 everything else being equal... or so.

And anyways, in my opinion and experience if you are purchasing an used car you should get the latest model year that you can afford, as most first model year bugs are gone by then.

I just used a Depreciation calculator from http://www.carprice.com/depreciation-calculator and it looks like a $60,000 new car will be worth $30,000 in about 4 years. Sounds about right? If so, that's great news. It means I can afford a 2009 M3 in 2013, assuming I start working very soon.

OK, here's a contrarian view on the '08 vs. '09 iDrive. The difference in ease of use is trivial. The '09 has a higher resolution screen. I could care less.

$35,000 is enough money to get you in for clean, low mileage CPO E46M3. That'll do the job for 2-3 years.

Although E9X M3's 1st year depreciation is crazy, I don' think we'll see 3 years old M3 at 25-30k. I'm guessing it'll be cap at 35-40k. Just because there will be a lot of people wants them. I think price will stay around 35-40k in 3-4 years then go around 30-35k at 4-5 years.

New E9X M3's depreciation is very similar level with M5/6, P cars and AMG cars.
They are all very similar in used car market, they drop big time in first 1-2 years then stay about the same for 2-3 years. Then another drop in 3-4 years. So that's my guess.

I agree about the new Idrive, When I was M school all the new cars had new M drive. The controller and buttons look and feel very cheap and if you grab the controller it moves around from side to side in its hole in the console, however the new graphics were nice. Just my 2 cents.

using the http://www.carprice.com/depreciation-calculator again, I put $70,000 (an M3 with all the options i want). After 4 years, it says it'll go down to a $35,000 value. The dream seems feasible!

Some of the crystal ball depreciation estimates are wishful thinking. Just look at 3yo E46's, they are going for 34-38k here in CA and that is a last gen model. I think what isugoo is saying is spot on. Huge drop in the first year but this rate of depreciation will not continue in the following years.
