I'll have to bookmark this thread for when my 09 with 37K miles and 24ppm lead content in the oil decides to eat it one of these days. I know it's coming...

So is this a problem on ALL s65s, or has BMW remedied the issue now?

No, only a small fraction it appears.

All of them. There hasn't been any redesign of the engine other than the switch to unleaded bearings some time in 2011. There is some evidence that clearances were marginally increased with those new bearings, but so far it's not conclusive. There is an 80 page thread about it somewhere on this forum!

So just out of curiosity, you did not have extended warranty and they still covered this?

All I'm trying to figure out is why they did that for you lol, not trying to be mean here! Did you always have your car serviced at BMW dealership? And lastly, I understand EAS is a reputable BMW shop, but did the dealership not say anything to you regarding you taking the car to EAS and having the engine opened up?

Thanks,
Sandeep

Tom, My man!! I was JUST drafting an email to show you this thread and hoped you chimed in. Great! Can you link us here your post and findings? No need to keep it discrete as I'm getting a brand new motor! Thanks again for all of your work in figuring this out!

Sure thing, here's your report, the obvious high lead/copper numbers are present:

Please keep me updated on progress.

It's shocking that we are all shocked that BMW threw you a bone to get this issue fixed. Let's see if BMWUSA will be more flexible with future claims

AND S85B50!

read this very well documented report, you won't be able to sleep soundly afterwards:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ht=rod+bearing

And No, had BMW issued a recall, we're talking massive costs here to corporate, they'll likely take it on a case-by-case basis.

Hello Sandeep,

No, I did not have any warranty. They didn't mind that I took it to EAS, as the issue was obviously damaged from a bad bearing, and nothing a shop could have done. Facts are facts. I took it to them when I was in warranty, and the reason I didn't was because I would have never thought they would have issued a good will, and didn't want to pay dealer cost to inspect the damage. EAS made sense if it was just a bearing job, but in the end, wasn't.

My .02 cents, It's worth the $2,500 or so to get the job done out of warranty before the crank shaft gets damaged, than to hope BMW will fix the issue after the damage is done.

Justin

Wow, that's big news. Congrats!

Now who takes care of the engine re-build etc. Your BMW dealer?

Not to beat a dead horse but can you describe noise you heard that alerted you from the get go?

Wonder if BMW is going to start making good on this, and making it a TSB.

They know there is a problem. They would not be giving out free engines if not.
I don't recall anyone having that specific reaction to you claim. In fact we all know (admit) that there are many in warranty S65 full engine replacements that are not posted about or discussed here or anywhere online. That is why I made a really rough attempt to quantify this unknown here in this thread, arriving at a worst case/upper estimate of a 0.5% failure rate. Hardly an E46 M3 engine problem in its magnitude.

One must always ask what failure rate is an "official problem" and what isn't?

From the epic bearing clearance thread and input from Clevite near the end of the thread I'm reasonably sure there is no looming large scale flaw in the S65, bearing clearances nor oil recommendation. Could BMW have engineered a combination of clearances and oil that resulted in fewer failures? Probably so, but they wanted the trade-offs exactly where they wanted them.

All engines in all cars have cases of failure well below the mean mileage to failure, that's almost a tautology... That does not mean there is a major flaw in bearing clearances or oil specifications.

TSB will not happen. It is a case by case deal, at least up to this point it has been.

While Blackstone reports don't 100% confirm anything, this is why I think it's imperative that people start keeping track. 80 ppm is biblical. I'd rather spend $25 each oil change and know if I'm starting to head towards the danger zone, rather than find out when it's too late and hope BMW covers a new engine.

Glad it all worked out for you OP!

P.S 12.5k mile run on the oil? Dang...

Completely agree. We're going as far as to recommend oil samples on every oil change, we keep extra containers here.

I didn't have an exact mileage provided, so it's an estimate we use based on the high side.

Regular oil samples are essentially the closest way to know what's going on inside without tearing apart the engine, possibly giving one a fighting change before something catastrophic happens.

Nice work. Good to have a real account like yours to balance the occasional unsubstantiated speculation that BMW is hellbent on denying repairs both in and out of warranty. I'm encouraged by your report, but not astonished like others. I've witnessed numerous goodwill repairs on problems that may or may not have been widespread. Why? Because it's good for business to create this sentiment
