Yes, if you track, it will make a difference and they are a tad to harsh. I went back to 19"

20" is just for the look, 19" better for track handling

19" is better, I remember back even a decade ago, 19's were not considered trackable, more like lightweight forged 17's. Does this still hold true or has technological caught up to thinner tires? I say this based on my own experiences as I am not very knowledgeable in tire technology.

M3's standard tire OD is large enough to take 20s without much compromise.
As long as you stay within lighter 20s, you should be fine.
IMO, 20s look perfect on M3.

20 is too big. 19 is perfect size for the m3 or even better 18. I saw the black HRE 18 on one of the dakar yellow on here. Awesome rims and you cannot tell it is 18.

I have 20s... purely for looks.. there is one slight problem, the wheel rubs against the plastic in the arch when you turn the wheel.

I'm running 20s and have no regrets. Looks great and don't feel that the ride is harsh. I'm on stock EDC suspension though.

I went with 20'. I think 18 is the ideal if you track, followed by 19 which I think is the overall ideal. You will also find a wider tire offer with 18/19 than 20. but I don't/won't track the M. it all depends on the wheel design I think. some wheels look big enough in 19 or even in 18, while others might seem like 19's even though they are 20'. Had this happen on my other car, I had 18' at first and they looked terribly small when compared to different 18' rims on same model cars, which is why I went with 20' for the M, the wheel design is similar and was afraid it would look a bit undersized. I think wheels with steplip/normal lip usually appear smaller in size, especially when the face is different color to the lip. concave or straight face with no lip seem to appear according to the size. IMO

I tried all three .... 18s 19s and 20s

I had a set of 18 Advan RGII for the track, 20 Advan RS-Ds for daily, and now I have some 19 BBS LM-Rs. I do like the 20s but I wanted to go really wide so I went with the 19s.

That's because you have wrong sized tires, not the wheels.

Nope it will not rub as long as you stay within proper fitting tires.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the 20" BBS CHR'S more on the heavier side?

Good point, this becomes specially important if you drive in an area with a lot of potholes and you still want to run 20"s.
