Why stretched tires???

I saw a 370Z today with wheels that had stretched tires on it. I wondered why the outer lip of the rim stuck out so much and then saw the tires were "stretched". Why would people do this? I figure its for lowering the car more without rubbing? Doesn't it affect the ability of the tire to perform the way it was designed to? Plus, rim sticking out so far=easy curb damage...

I am just trying to find out why so many people are doing this... Anyone?

Op,
You mean like this:

This is one fine example of FORM OVER FUNCTION. Take the car pictured above to a track. We'll see how beat up the undercarriage would be and I'll not even talk about how the tires and rims will look like after a track day.

Look at my sig. I hate car enthusiasts who do these type of stuff.

I lived in the Dallas area '89-'91. Saw many lowered rides with wheels that were much wider than the tires and usually stuck out past the fenders. I moved to SoCal and never saw this fad again. It just looked bad; I never got it.

I saw guys in Japan doing this in the late 90's when I lived over there, but kids are getting ridiculous with it now. The 370 looks plum retarded in this post.

The main idea of it came from guys that use there cars for drifting (JDM side of things.) Its about fitting bigger wheels, less rubbing, saving $$ on tires, and stance....Not everyone is a race car driver and really cares about handling corners at a millions miles an hour. Just because you can't relate of understand something doesn't make it stupid. Furthermore its all about looks and its probably safer because guys with stance tend to drive slower.

Im actually really surprised you guys are hating on stance when old school bimmer guys are all about that. And it looks so good.

I must add that the 370 is extreme stretch and I'm not a fan of that type of fit I'm more into fitment like this:

A little bit of stretch is fine. Reduces sidewall roll over and increases handling response a bit. As mentioned above, BMW and other manufacturers have a bit of stretch in some wheel/tire fitments.

But the "stance" guys are nuts with the stretching. Doesn't serve any function at all besides appearance.
