Shipping a car....question!
To those who have shipped a car....what is proper and expected with regards to tipping the driver?
I paid top dollar for an enclosed carrier, from cali to NY... Obviously the drivers get paid, is a tip expected? If so, how much...? I'm not thrilled with the service thus far, car was picked up 3 days later than originally planned, and is now being delivered later than planned and I'm taking time off of work to take delivery. All that being said, i'm a fair guy and i'm not looking to stiff anyone. Thoughts, experiences? thanks

It probably is not the driver's fault. Maybe call the carrier and try to get something knocked off the price for tardiness?

3 days later than expected? You're lucky! My shipping took three weeks longer than expected (was quoted 1 week, it took 1 month). Better yet? They rear-ended my car in the process so it was delivered with a buckled rear bumper.
Needless to say, I didn't tip (nor could I even if i wanted to, as i never got to meet the driver). What shipping company did you go through? (Sorry my post doesnt help you much) |

Yikes, these stories are scaring me. I used intercity lines, the 6speedonline supporting vendor. They came pretty highly recommended

I didn't tip though I did think about it after the fact. $20 would buy the driver a good lunch. The car had some transport blemishes and a scratch on the bumper I didn't notice until afterwards. So it's a good thing I didn't tip.

If the car arrived without any damage I'd throw the driver $50-$100, depends on type of car. My feeling is I'd rather have things run a few days late and car arrive without damage than it be on-time and scratched. Plus, prob not drivers fault it is late, someone screwed up scheduling.

I didn't think there was a tipping etiquette with this service. There are some good articles written online for general consensus on tipping for services. It breaks down to whether you need to tip owner-operator services, sub-contractors, etc.

I've shipped my cars 4 times (to and from) in a closed trailer with 5 other cars and never tipped the driver. The thought didn't even cross my mind to do so.

It's not easy driving from one part of the country to another... Even though you're paying almost $1800, I'd tip him $50-$100 if the car gets delivered without any scratches.

I went open, but the damage was not from the open shipping option. They bottomed the car out at all four corners, which I presume they would do when loading any trailer.
Comprehensive took car of it for a $0 deductible and I got my front plate holes filled for free.
