20.4 mpg according to the MFD but I've only got a little over 200 miles on the car and haven't seen much past half throttle yet! 75% highway so far...

15.1 MPG - 70% city / 30% hwy (Not bad for the 4100+ lb. ‘vert.)

I just test drove a 2010 E92 with 22 k. It showed 8 mpg at the start of a 5 mile or so circuit and 7.6 mpg at the end. I was driving mostly city at the speed limit with maybe 2 miles of interstate. Other than a quick burst of heavy throttle onto the interstate, nothing radical. I was expecting an increase in mpg not a drop on this fairly sedate drive. Anyone else seen v low mpg like this. Makes me think all is not right with this car......

I get about 17.5 average city and highway. I do not get stuck in heavy traffic regularly but I also do not try to maximize highway fuel economy and every tank gets a number of full throttle runs through a gear or two. Car has 50k miles and my average has been about this for the 20k that I have owned it. On a pure highway trip, I can hit about 20, again while driving with no regard for maximizing fuel economy. I could probably manage low 20s on the highway, but might as well be driving a camry if that was my driving style.

On the final 45 miles of a highway trip I filled up the tank and reset the trip computer's average MPG and it was reading 25.2 when I reached my destination just off the interstate. I specifically tried to get good fuel economy on that leg just to see how much I could eek out if I really needed to. I used cruise control most of the way set it between 71-73 mph indicated speed.
The problem is I don't think I could hypermile a whole tank considering the addictive nature of this engine's power and responsiveness. You really don't buy this car for the fuel economy, but it certainly seems you can easily get well over 20 MPG with these cars! I'm kind of pissed off that we have to pay the gas guzzler tax since if it were EPA rated at 23 MPG highway (certainly attainable with the M3) there would be no penalty. |
