Service History is concerning- opinions?
Hello all. I'm brand spanking new to the forum and am planning on joining the M family. I'm looking at a 2008 M3 E92 DCT and just pulled the service history. Seems a bit concerning(especially the 2 DCT complaints on file). I'm asking the SA to see what was done to remedy those complaints:
Current mileage: 36k 2008 E92DCT History 03/2008 Production date 6/16/2008 @2666 miles Manual transmission in 1st gear failing to synchronize 10/27/2008 @8709 miles M3 Reprogram for DCT(I believe this is from the service bulletin) 08/12/2009 15613 miles 1st oil change, gearshift paddle, steering wheel permanent malfunction(uh, wha?) 8/13/2009 15687 miles Shift quality in "D", downshift, double clutch transmission DKG too rough(uh, oh) 7/15/2011 26201 miles 2nd oil change, Mass air flow sensor HFM for secondary air system permanent malfunction, Final drive unit, grating noise while cornering 9/8/2011 26908 miles rear wheel bearing unpleasant noise 3/30/2012 30258 miles intake filter housing leaking 4/25/2012 31069 POW STR PUMP NOISY Is this par for course for an M3? Help please. Thanks. |

It is out of warranty. I'm rolling the dice with out of warranty M3's since I DIY on my vehicles quite a bit(and have access to shops/BME indi mechanic if it's too big of a job at home). However, a new transmission swap is definitely not a cost I want to take on, DIY or shop :/ Drats.

I would be concerned with that one in particular, however, my neighbor owns an E92 and has claimed to be ecstatic with it since day one, although he did have the same MAF HMF issue. Some of the issues with that one seem a bit much, you should probably look into something else, whether it was in warranty or not (why test your luck?).
What the heck is a permanent steering wheel malfunction? The control unit itself causing nothing to work? Also, I have heard of people having issues with rough shifts, but claimed it would only occur every so often at no time / condition in particular. |

You should pose this question on the M3 forum, but it sounds like to me that the original owner just wasn't with it on the DCT. They are great driven like a manual, but not as an automatic.
The others: meh, it's an M3 that is flighty and expensive to repair. |

Pass.
Missing the mandatory 1,200 mile break in service (which is FREE in the USA...) and final drive + wheel bearing noise suggests an owner that wasn't too careful with the car. |

I wouldn't fucks with it. No break in. Long oil change intervals. Someone beat that car up, poor thing.
I predict a maintenance nightmare for whoever gets saddled with this mess. |

If it only had a few problems at first and they were corrected, I'd say go for it. But it looks like there is something problematic here every few months, and that's what I'd recommend you avoid it.
Also, very low mileage like that means it was probably a weekend car or saw a lot of city miles, which will be very hard on everything.
