Over 70K Miles on Original Throttle Actuators?
I've read nearly all the threads on failing throttle actuators, but I'm interested to know one thing barely discussed in those threads: Have many people have managed to exceed 70K miles or more without a throttle actuator replacement? Or is it just about inevitable they will go by the time the car hits 70K?
Edit: If you've passed 70k can you share your driving style/environment? Feather the throttle often, never light on the throttle, tend to drive in lower gear/higher revs, mostly city, mostly highway, etc. Last edited by Theodore; 01-19-2016 at 09:03 PM.. |

Plenty of cars that have gone far longer. There are probably a bunch that have never been replaced.
I am nudging 70k on the originals. Just keep driving until they cause a problem. It's not really a routine maintenance item that you should throw money at.

I like reading their magazine, lot of bickering about the new bimmers, funny to read. Every now and then there is a good article too. If you plan on doing a BMW performance event, you will get great discount too. I haven't done track days with them yet.

So, the car I purchased had no codes but was on the original actuators with 103k on them.
I had Alex@Alpine tune my DCT and come other simple coding. As soon as we finished and I ran the car a few miles, Bank 1 took a dump. I'm sure the actuator was already roasted, just the dealership selling the car hid the error code or something (still learning the platform). I finished swapping both of them last week with new actuators and upgraded reduction gears from alpina-527. |

It's a manual so I don't mash on the throttle so maybe that helps. I also don't run the most aggressive throttle setting either. I did have an issue 40,000 miles ago where the engine went into low power mode and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. - I was going up hill - sitting in traffic so I wasn't very deliberate with the throttle I shut the car off and turned it back on again and all was normal with no lights. I did have a code that I cleared and it did relate to the throttle actuator... But that was 40,000 miles ago Since then I try to be more deliberate with the throttle rather than feathering it. At the same time I don't mash it but rather roll the throttle on smoothly and quickly. |

116k miles on originals, 19 track days. Always rev out to 8600 rpm when warm; no issues with throttle actuators.
Have had other engine stuff fail though: * valve train tensioner at 114k * engine coolant temperature sensor 116k (maybe? Will know for sure tomorrow) |

93,000 miles on mine. No issues neither. Manual transmission. A mix of city and highway. I push her from time to time when engine is warm. Solid car

I'm at 77k but I've noticed some granularity in the throttle at low RPMs/Idle so I'm guessing I may have some tooth wear in that area of the actuators. No error codes though so odometergear retrofit might be on the agenda.
