Thanks for taking the time to put together this write-up. Good stuff. It does remind me of the Spartanburg factory tour that I did a couple of years back. I recall that I was blown away by the logistical aspect of the assembly process. Very little stock, most parts arrive on a particular station at the time the shell of the car arrives.

i took the Munich factory trip and they didn't mind at all when I took some pictures. Factory trip was awesome and I throughly enjoyed it.

Open for public doen't mean that there's no crime to publish photos. There are tours in mil bases where you can see weapons and systems, but take a photo and send it here - MPs are quite soon behind the door to arrest you.

Nice photos and story still. I hope publishing them won't cause us problems to visit factories in future.

Thanks for the post! Very nice read. As I read through your description of the process, I envisioned my car going through each step. The pics of the cabrio in production were fantastic -- nice to be able to see how they did it (and how little time it takes from cutting metal to testing on the track).

Hey! Fellow convertible owner here too. Did you notice the different headrests in the convertible? Looks like they're a two-piece design now. Wonder if that's for Europe only, or if that's a 2009 feature?

Paint shop was closed because the new Z4 is in there right now and they are test painting. There were a few Z4s in the production line but they all had blue tarps on them, so it was hard to see.

Great post! Me and my buds took a pilgrimmage to BMW Welt in Munich last weekend! Great place to go and if anyone is ever in the area a "must see" for BMW owners! We didnt get to do the factory tour though because we went on a saturday, but the cars they had on display at the museum (especially getting to be up close and personal to a 507) was absolutely amazing!
