Thumbs up New Camera - Nikon D90

I just picked up the new Nikon D90 DSLR camera (with 18-105mm Nikon VR Lens) and did a few quick shots with it the other day.

This is my first DSLR so I only used the camera on basic settings (auto most of the time) without a tri-pod. I was impressed with the vibration-reduction lens, even using it as a simple point and shoot the picture quality is astounding.

I'm looking forward to getting better acquainted with the camera, hopefully I can master HDR before my coupes comes in.

P.S. Any Nikon D-Series users on this forum, please send any useful links my way regarding use of this fine machine

Enjoy the pictures (minor editing via PS)...

My Father in Law is thinking about getting the D90. He has the D70 now. Where did you pick it up?

I picked it up from Ritz Camera in the mall because even online the majority of places were selling it for the same price.. except for one place which had it for $120.00 bucks cheaper.. so i hassled the guy at Ritz Camera until he gave me a $70.00 discount lol

great camera.. no regrets

As a reasonable amatuer photographer and a D80 user I have 2 pieces of advice.....

1) Shoot in Manual (M) mode as much as poss, if not then Shutter or Apeture priority modes. Once you have the power to control how the light is exposed onto the sensor then the whole photogrpahy thing takes on new life

2) Shoot in RAW. JPG is a compressed, and therefore manipulated, format. RAW is how the camera captured the light / image. Using a RAW convertor like ACR 4.2 (comes withe PS Elements 6) you'll be able to make much better adjustments to your pics, ie expsoure, tint, whiet balance, etc etc

BTW, the pics are superb. I'm considering an upgrade and while I want a D300 I think a D90 is a better choice (cost wise).

Nice Pics. I just picked up the D90 recently with the 18-200 VR lens and 50 f1.4. I absolutely love it so far. This is my first DSLR as well. I was considering the D60 or D80 before, but once I found out that the D90 was coming out waiting 4 weeks for it to hit was well worth it!

I have both of those lenses, both very good at what they do. the 18-200vr is the king of walk around lenses and the f1.4 is a superb portrait lens. Good choices.

i completely disagree with 1). if you want to shoot entirely in M, get a regular SLR. while it's a good training exercise, with modern cameras, there is absolutely no reason to shoot in M. back in the 60s, when there was no other choice because cameras weren't nearly as advanced as today, this would make sense.

i would highly recommend shooting in P, which is the program auto exposure mode. you still have control over all core adjustments but things you don't want to worry about are left to the camera.

cameras these days are way too sophisticated to ignore what they can do (and do better than you can).

it's like saying using paper maps is a better way to get around than using a navigation system. yes, you're in complete control over what you're doing but it takes you forever to figure out where you are, where you're going and how to get there. and there is a very good chance of you getting lost a few times along the way.

having said that, there is a place for the M mode (in cases where sensors don't have much to work with) but i wouldn't say shooting always in M is the way to go.

as far as 2), capture images in RAW, i'd use your judgement on that (considering it's ~8-9MB/image). while it's true it's a much better format for post-processing, unless you're planning on hanging your pics on a wall or want to shoot professionally (in which case D90 doesn't cut it anyway) JPEG + FINE setting will do just fine.

D90 is a really nice camera, but it's not hardcore. so you don't have to be hardcore either.

to OP: great pics. What mode did you use. I found that my D90 frequently overexposes in AP.

It's a little bit the fiddle, much more who holds the bow. And canon lenses better than Nikon? I'll give you even up, but that's about it.
