M-DCT Transmission Fluid

I know BMW says the DCT transmission fluid will last a lifetime but i would like to change it every so often, my car has about 40k and i kinda want to change it when i change my Diff fluid.

Does any know what type of fluid(oil) bmw use?

I would call the dealer and see what they say.

Pentosin FFL4. Tranny filter is lifetime, not the fluid.

When I did the DCT fluid change, the shop was only able to get 4 liters out. I was told if it'd take 9 liters when it's empty.

When my car was in for its 1,200 mile service (July 2011) I noticed that the DCT fluid had not been touched (looked on the service sheet at checkout). I was under the impression that this was something that fell under the break-in service, so I asked my service advisor (long-time friend). He informed me that the DCT fluid is a lifetime fluid and will never need to be flushed/changed.

I find this somewhat difficult to believe, but apparently BMW insists that it is in fact lifetime (still do not fully believe them). I plan on keeping this car forever and the DCT reliability/longevity has been the only component of the car that has even crossed my mind as being a potential issue in the future.

I remember reading somewhere on this forum who the manufacturer is for the M-DCT in our cars. If we were able to contact them, could they confirm the "best practice" for changing the DCT fluid? Anyone remember who manufactures our transmission?

From my own understanding of transmissions (somewhat limited but I'm no car dummy) I was thinking of following standard automatic transmission service intervals (40,000-60,000 miles). Any thoughts?

This might help:

http://www.dctfacts.com/information/...ubricants.aspx

"Findings

In conclusion, say leading researchers, new-generation dual clutch transmission fluid additive technologies have been developed that are distinct from ATF and MTF practice; geared to the unique requirements of DCT conditions, the new technologies enable shudder-free service in excessive conditions, longer drain intervals and longer transmission life. These advances come in addition to fulfilling the fundamental requirements of wet clutch friction performance, anti-shudder friction durability, thermal and oxidative stability, load-carrying ability, bearing pitting performance and anticorrosion performance."

Good read.

I still find this VERY interesting how 4 years into this model and no one has posted a good DCT fluid change DIY.

I think our best course of action is to do the partial drain more often than a typical full service with an auto tranny.

I plan to do the partial drain at the same time I change the diff oil...once every 15k miles.

Agreed, would love to see something on this. Have heard stories and rumors but seem to be just that. Was wondering about this SSP gold trans fluid Drew is using on his upgraded DCT and if it's useful on the stock trans. Just love to hear about a DIY change.

Here's the instructions from BMW TIS about topping off DCT oil. They do not seem to have instructions about changing oil because they obviously don't want anyone to do it.

- Connect diagnosis system and
start service functions (drive).
- Start engine (drive position N or
P)
- Record transmission temperature
using Tester
- (Drive position P)
- Permissible starting temperature
≤ 32 °C
- Idle speed: maintain at approx.
2000 rpm for 1 minute.
- Open fluid adjusting screw (1)
- Fill until fluid emerges
Max. transmission fluid
temperature 40 °C
- Insert screw

BMW DCTF-1
83 22 0 440 214 1-litre can

BMW DCTF-1
83 22 2 147 477 20-litre can

Here they are. BTW for some reason my supplier quoted me a lower price per liter for the 1L small bottles compared to the 20L version.
