Problems with i-Drive controller retrofit
Waited for a month or two and finally got the trim cover and controller in. Ripped out my old trim and plugged in my new CIC controller and, to my dismay, it didn't work!
Anyone else have problems with this plug-n-play mod? My E92 M3 is a 01/2008 build... could that be the problem? The other issue is that the part number for the controller they sent me was 65-82-9213-309 which my dealer said was for a replacement of 65-82-9189-048. I thought this was the problem but another member's recent post with those great pictures showed the new part number1 (even though he listed the old one as the one to get). Needless to say, I'm extremely bummed. Anyone have any ideas? |

Thanks for pointing out that my controller P/N was different from the one that I actually ordered. I did not pay attention to that as the dealer did not informed me of the superceded part before shipping, and just because it just worked in my 05/08 production M3 right away. The only thing that I can think of is that the two major changes in the MY2008 production was the M-DCT and the TCU, and both were performed after 04/08. The -309 controller is a brand new part from production 03/09-on, and the -048 controller was valid until 03/09. So it is either a hardware, software or both changes in the -309 controller. The -309 part is so new that neither realOEM.com, Tischer or United BMW have this part listed yet. In other words, discarting that your controller may be defective from factory/shipping/handling, the other possibility is that for your particular production of 01/08 the controller that will work is the -048 and not the -309. There's another controller for the Coupe as well, 65 82 9 189 050, however, there's member KKSigua M3 Coupe of production date 05/08 that's also using the -048 controller without issues according to his posts. I would say, try your controller in any other production date 3 Series with iDrive to see if it works in another car at all. At least you need to know first if the controller is not defective. Then you can determine if this is a production date issue. In the meantime I will be posting in my other thread a caution note about this issue. |

This would be a major bummer if early '08 production couldn't update the Idrive. Mine's a 3/08 production, so I'm probably ok.
It'll be interesting to see if the OP can return his parts or if he's stuck with them. Although I'd think he could sell them pretty easily right here.

Have you guys tried sourcing the new controller they used in the 5-series from September 2008 to March 2009? That was designed to work with the older i-Drive systems ... just a thought? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...58&hg=65&fg=45 Scratch that ... part number listed for the 5 series is the same as what you guys are listing for the M3. |

Hmm...I have the parts on order...getting a tad nervous now.
"Scratch that ... part number listed for the 5 series is the same as what you guys are listing for the M3." This leads me to think that the OP may have a defective LCI controller.

Can someone translate this to english. Does that mean I'll be able to change to the new Idrive controller or not.

In a word...maybe. I have a 2/08 build E92. When I ordered my LCI controller (still back-ordered) I asked for the part # for the late 2008 build 5 series controller, since that was the original bastard child idrive that used the new controller w/ our old hardware. The part though was automatically changed over to the new part that the OP spoke of in the computer system. So, to me it would seem that those of us w/ a pre 4/08 build "should" be able to do this. After all, those 5 series customers would need the ability to order a new controller should theirs break at some point, and I can't imagine that BMW would have 2 differant controllers for the 5 series.

We know for sure that the -048 and the -309 replacement iDrive controllers work in a 05/08 production M3, based on mine and in another member retrofit. We know that the -048 controller is the P/N of both the M3 Sedan and the MY2009 5-Series, and that the M3Coupe and Convertible controller has a different P/N ending in -050, however the -048 controller is already known to work in a M3 Coupe so that eliminates any compatibility issues between the Sedan and the Coupe/Convertible controllers based on P/N. We know that the -048 controller was effective from production 09/08 up to 02/09, and the -309 controller is effective from 03/09 -on. If you ordered a -048 controller after 02/09 you will automatically get a -309 controller. So there is a difference in controllers based on production date and not on body style, at least in P/N. That is different from the -048 and the -050 split. What we do not know is what happened with the OP 01/08 production iDrive and the -309 controller that they don't like each other. We know that there was at least a TCU hardware/software change in 04/08 production M3, that may or may not affect this new -309 controller functionality with the "old" iDrive; this is just a guess. It could be as simple as an iDrive update that the OP M3 have not received and the 05/08 production has, or it could be as simple as that particular controller is defective. We do not know. I will be testing my controller in a 04/08 M3 soon, so that could help a little to verify compatibility depending of production date or iDrive coding version. |

I have got the part# 65 82 9213 309 and I haven't tried it on my 2007 E92 M3yet. The reason being the trim is on back order. My car has got software update as latest as 10/08 although I am not sure of the software version. I will try installing the controller and see whether this would work. If not I will return the controller and cancel the back order for the trim. The controller was ordered in April '09.
It will be a huge disappointment if it doesn't work.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'm really hoping that I just have a defective controller. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to test it out and my dealership has been less than helpful. Bit the bullet and ordered a new controller (not though my dealership this time). Looking forward to see if aussiem3 is successful.

This is where I am at so far. I have a 2/08 production E92 M3.
I ordered P/N 51 16 7 903 960 (6mt M3 Center Console Cover) and 65-82-9-213-311 (New Idrive controller unit) Plugged it all in and swapped everything out (takes about 15 min total), and of course, the idrive doesn't work. No response to any of the shortcut buttons, nor does the selector knob function in anyway. I can not even click "Accept" when the car starts up. The system is backlit, so I know that the controller is getting power, however it is not functioning. Does anyone know if the controller needs to be coded to the car by the dealership? No matter which P/N the parts counter entered into their computer system it was always automaticly turned into the -311 part number. This means that even if you wanted a -048, or -309 controller YOU WILL ONLY RECIEVE -311. I would imagine then that if I had a 9/08 build 5 series, that originally used the -048 controller I think, and that controller broke, it would be replaced w/ a -311 controller. This leads me to think that since the problem must be with the TCU change that took place in 4/08 since both the OP and I have the older CDMA setup, and both are having issues; him with -309, and me with -311. Any thoughts?

Hmm....I wonder what is involved w/ swapping out the TCU to the newer, post 4/08 TCU. If nothing else, this would eliminate one possibility.
I am off to put my -311 controller in my 2009 335xi to see if it works in that vehicle. Will post back soon.

OK:
So I just put my -311 controller into my 4/09 build 335xi E90. This vehicle normally uses the -309 controller. Of course, the -311 controller works fine in the 335xi, so we also now know for certain that -309 and -311 are compatible. I the put the -309 controller in my 2/08 M3, but it did not function either. Since the -048 and -309 are interchangeable, and that -048 and 050 are interchangeable, I am willing to accept that -048, 050, 309, and 311 are all interchangeable with each other on post 4/08 build BMWs (if this swap had worked I would have love to get the new 7 series Idrive controller with it's neato black ceramic controller). The only thing I can imagine may fix the pre 4/08 computability issue is a complete re-coding of the vehicle to make certain that every system is as up to date as possible. Of course, there is absolutely no guarantee that this would work, and is merely conjecture on my part.

Having my M3 re-coded tomorrow. Hopefully it will work. I'll post more when I get the car back.
On the plus side, I'm getting really good at replacing the center console. I think I am under 7 minutes total now

Hey Lugnut, you're about 67 miles away from me. Would you mind if I came by tried your new controller on my 3/08 build car? I'd like to try it before purchase since there's a lot of questions on whether it will really work. I had a software update about 2 weeks ago, so I'm pretty confident I have the newest software.
