Miss shifted and over reved engine!
Hi guys,
So stupid me.... 2 days ago I miss shifted from 3-4th and went from 3rd-2nd instead. I was going nearly or at redline in 3rd and mis-shifted to 2nd. The car stopped moving forward and I clutched in right away. I don't remember exactly how fast I was going but I was sure the engine went above redline for sure. I felt so bad afterwards and it's been bugging in ever since. The car drove fine afterwards, and I have put about 100+ miles so far. I don't hear any weird engine noise besides the normal noise and it still pulled strong. But every time I drive the car, I feel so guilty... My question is, what should I do now? Should I take to a dealer to get it inspected? It would void my warranty right? I still have 1 year left of extended warranty. But I don't want to drive and have the engine explode 1 day... I feel so sorry for my car... I am so paranoid right now, and I ran outside a few times just to start the engine and drive around looking for weird noises Any help guys.. Thanks... Update 3/24/2015 I took my car to an reputable bmw shop and had the technician look over it (bimmer sport in GTA). The tech test drove it and listen for noises, and think there is nothing wrong at the moment, at least there is nothing touching or sounding weird in the engine. But being pretty high mileage, 91000km (56k miles), they did advise me to look into bearing replacement, which is what I will do next probably... Thanks for the reply guys. Well our cars record max rpm so you out of luck there on the warranty. Do an oil change and inspect for metal fragments asap. If any found you'll need to do your rod bearings at minimum. You're probably be fine though so don't get too worried about it.

How would it got above red line? Wouldn't the rev limiter prevent that? I've bounced the tach off of the rev limiter a couple of times playing around...dont recall the car going above 8,400 RPMs.

The rev limiter only cuts of fuel, but when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd at a high speed, it will cause engine mechanical over rev due to engine speed trying to match actual speed

Do what was suggested above. I needed a replacement motor for my m3 due to the classic bearing issue. BMW denied any repairs due to a over revv. I was lucky (the previous owner over revved).... I caught them out on the technicality of selling me a car approved by BMW quality check, and not mentioning a over revv to me when buying.

No one here can tell you if its ok, even if right now all signs point to being ok as an event such as this can severely weaken without breaking but lead to premature breakage in the future.
I'd say the worst part of this is no matter what, if you have ANY problems with your car mechanically related to the drivetrain, BMW will most likely refer to this event as to why they won't cover it. So essentially, you voided the part of your warranty that covers drivetrain, assuming BMW decides to check the data logs for rpm, which I have to imagine they do for ALL drivetrain warranty claims. But I'm not the CEO for BMW N.A. so I have no actual knowledge as to their policies. Cheers, e46e92

Do they not offer a method to erase codes like they do for the N54 & N55 motors?!?.

I would send an oil sample out for testing to black stone and take a look before starting the car again. Better to be a little patient than to risk it. That oil sample will tell you alot whats going in inside.

Realistically what would an oil sample show? I think the major potential damage would be to the valves if one floated and hit a piston. Doesn't seem like this is the case. I don't think over revving for 1 second would wear out the bearings. Right?

I'm guessing you are going to be fine. Chances are if major damage was done you would know by now. Go have fun and don't worry about it further.

OP...do a "money shift" search and you will understand more about mechanical over rev verses fuel cut off...
I think if you bent/broke something you would have known in 100mi. you have driven... Not sure oil sample would help in this situation.. No codes...engine has no strange noises...your probably ok. I hate the stock shifter....DCT is the way to go in this car. |

Well after going to the mechanic and stuff, it seems like nothing MAJOR has happened, but I am still paranoid that I probably screwed up the bearings even more, so I am gonna do a bearing service soon...

Saw the insides of an S65 motor the weekend. Logs show the motor clocked 10,334 rpm, classic money shift. The customer complained about a knock on the motor; I can assure you all that the logs are the first things BMW check when such a motor comes in.
On 3 of the bearings, the copper layer could be seen for most of the bearing surface. This guy was actually pretty lucky the motor didn't seize up. |

Dangerous?? Why?? I'm not a mechanic...I dont know very much about cars and i admit that...hence the question.
I question your intent with such a comment? I can only assume that you are being condescending? If so, what purpose does it serve? Are you are implying that only individuals with mechanic expertise should drive an M3? That would seem completely idiotic, and i pity your inability to be a productive member of a conversation. If you are expressing concern for the health of my car because my post conveys that I abuse my car, then let me reassure you. I do drive it hard!! That's why I drive an M3 and not a Prius. But I do manage to conduct the required maintinence, despite my aparent limited knowledge levels. Regardless... OP, keep us updated if you end up finding anything wrong. Good luck.
