DCT GTS software versions
My newly acquired 2008 M3 was upgraded with a GTS transmission update. It started in D2 which is the telltale sign for the GTS version.
ISTA/P showed the transmission had version 7846041 and was proposing to update to 7847869. I allowed it to update the EGS (and a few other modules) and when complete, the DCT was back to US spec, or at least not the GTS version (i.e. starts in D2 etc.). I read (don't remember where) that the M3 DCT GTS software version 7845773 could be used, so I spun up WinKfp and found version 5773 in the list and flashed the transmission with that version and voila, I got GTS version back. I didn't find 7846041 in the list of options so I have no idea where that version came from. After that long spiel, my question is, is 5773 the latest GTS version of the DCT software (given that I have the latest ISTA/P 3.55.1.001)? Is there a tutorial for how to find the ZB numbers of various modules? The GTS DCT module appears to be GS40, so looking at the files in the GS40 directory, how can I tell what the latest or most recent compatible version is? Thanks Peter Last edited by pshoey; 03-29-2015 at 08:56 PM.. |

The GTS DCT module firmware is part of the standard BMW coding dataset. So if you have any recent version of ISTA/P or a version of NCS that someone has packaged E89 data files, you should be able to code the GS40 module.
Yes, someone did pull just the GS40 files out of the dataset and those are floating around, but they are the same as the standard GS40 files as part of ISTA/P. |

And yet some vendors charge upwards of a $1,000 (except for one)......and people call the dealers "stealerships".
Ask me why I don't trust vendors..... Cheers, e46e92

Well, this is where opinion is divided. Those that provide a commercial service to upgrade the DCT firmware will tell that the stock GTS firmware shifts too fast for the standard euro/us transmission - 90ms vs 140ms and that they add value by "detuning" it to around 100ms. On the other hand, there are comments that they don't add anything.
My experience from the few days I have been running it are that it works very well, but whether there are truly any long term ramifications from the upgrade, only time will tell. From my perspective (and I'm no professional but have been "doing car stuff" for several decades) as long as you're not abusing the car then most likely the transmission (and the rest of the mechanicals) is rated well beyond what I can do on the road. Tracking a car, may well be a different story, but for me, I'm thoroughly happy with the result. Last edited by pshoey; 03-30-2015 at 09:42 PM.. |

I'd say the GTS DCT tune makes slow speed issues WORSE than the stock was after BMW did the fix. When slowing down to a crawl, and then stepping on the gas, there's NOTHING going on for 1-2 seconds, and then it puts it in gear. It's not as bad as the original DCT delay, but it's still not good.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

That's an interesting point. I haven't driven the latest US DCT version but I will flash the update this weekend and compare.
I haven't noticed the specific point you raised but I do love that the GTS version starts in D2 and remembers the last S setting. I assume the US DCT version you have doesn't do that? |
