Does this mean we can make an appt, demonstrate the noise and get a free vanos replacement under warranty?

I would even show this thread and video and see if it speeds up the process. But yes, I'm getting free VANOS under warranty. |

Mine was almost that simple. I showed them videos of mine and other cars and another thread from this forum where people had the same problem. They let my car sit for three days, started it, heard the noise, and agreed to fix it. All told, mine took a week and a half or so.

I just started noticing this on my car. This only happens if I leave the car sitting for a few days. I am at 39k miles. What are the consensus on this? Normal, Vanos issue, or the chain tensioner problem?

^Thanks, I was just looking at the other threads actually. I believe the very first time that I heard something like this was after an oil change which basically relieved all oil pressure in the engine. So I am leaning toward something related to oil pressure wherever the problem is. Did BMW change the parts in any of the suspected system listed or we are to expect the sound/problem to come back after another 30-40k miles after replacement?

oh, sorry for not being clear. I was wondering if BMW changed/redesigned any parts in their bin where we can expect the newer parts to be a permanent fix or we are to replace these items every 30-40k to avoid this noise.

Just stumbled upon this and I am also getting the grind at startup. However, what I have not seen anyone mention is, mine grinds ONLY when I park it on a slope meaning the front of the car is sitting higher than the rear, such as when you park on an inclined driveway. When I park on the street (flat) there is no noise.
Can is a 03/08 build with 60k on it now. Comments appreciated.

I'm at 28k miles by the way, and have heard the sound on and off for probably the last 10k miles. Others with nearly new cars have reported it, so it's not necessarily a mileage issue. Quote:
And for what it's worth, I reported in another thread that I had my car at the dealer last weekend in an attempt to get the noise formally documented and diagnosed. 1 full weekend and 5 cold starts later, no sound. Car was sitting outside and it was extremely damp and rainy all weekend. Happens in my garage nearly every morning. Make of that what you will..

I'm torn between pursuing this, given that the car runs 100% absolutely perfect with zero issues. Mine has had this noise for thousands and thousands of miles, and I've heard it on many many cars.

The vanos has split tension gears so lack of oil is not your issue. Possible the setting of the split gear or timing chain tension procedure was done incorrectly.
(1)Installation Note: If the hexagon socket screw is released or forgotten by mistake, the gear teeth can be readjusted with special tool 11 5 370. Screw in knurled screw on special tool 11 5 370 until gearwheel (1) lines up with bore (see arrow) on thread. Failure to tension the exhaust VANOS gear (1) will result in rattling noises at idle. (2)Release special tool 11 5 320 and continue barring engine at central bolt 10° to firing TDC position of cylinder no. 1. Installation Note: This minimizes timing chain and gearwheel play. |

I placed a call to my service manager and let him know about the issue, as well as the email I sent him and the shop foreman. He said that he would check into it and get back to me.

If you are referring to the hex screw ,that is not possible. It is a factory tool for assembly and disassemble. If you meant chain tension or exhaust vanos gear, that is possible.

hmm, I am 100% sure that this did not happen when the car was new. I am pretty anal about these rattle and sound so I would have noticed it. The first time this ever happened was after the oil change i did 15k miles ago. The car sat for 7 days about 2 months ago and there were no sound when I started it. So this just started happening. Maybe some wear in the vanos system over time? Some tolerance issue? As Mike pointed out earlier, if this will not do any harm long term, I would prefer not to have the dealership open up my engine. Thanks for everyone's input, learning new "features" of this car every day, haha.

Not vanos. Maybe lifter bleed? Or timing chain tensioner?
