IDK, feeling pretty special after analyzing these numbers closely. 1 of 14,766 manual coupes worldwide EVER. 1 of 3,121 LCI manual coupes worldwide EVER. 1 of 2528 LCI manual coupes in North America EVER. When I start breaking down color, ZCP and I have a moonroof it gets better and better. I have a rare beast.
Thank you OP profusely for posting.

I think the Pre-lci numbers, buyers were afraid of the DCT transmisson acting like the SMG, which as horrible. I think after the first round of DCT pioneers with good reviews, the DCT sales boosted up.

IE: I got mine, LCI E90, DCT.

2008 E90 M3 was released at a terrible time when the economy tanked. BMW made many 2008 models that just sat on lots and amazing deals were to be had.

For 2009+ E90 LCI models, BMW cut production back drastically.

Totally agree.

My 08 e92 m3 was a 6 speed cause I loved 6 speeds and had driven a DSG M5 and E46 and hated it.

Later I tried the DCT and felt the car was MADE for DCT more than 6MT and now own a DCT.

i am so confused on how to read or what the numbers mean. l

also how could there be such low production numbers ? does 3000 mean 3000 cars? how could there only be a grand total of like 3000 E90s per LCI ?? i am reading that right ? LOL

Nice comparison thanks to the OP.

I myself debate many time as I have driven both E92 6-speed MT and DCT which one would I own if I had to pick one for myself and I can't decide.

Here is how I stack them up in merits.

6spd MT Vs. DCT

* More fun 6spd MT

* More engaging 6spd MT

* Long term durability 6spd MT

* Cost effective (long term ownership) 6spd MT

* Greater Performance DCT

* Greater Versatility DCT

* Better suited to S65 high revving nature DCT

* More user friendly (for wives) DCT

* Higher resale value due to less expensive repair cost. 6spd MT

They both have advantages and disadvantages. If I was to go for a brand new with warranty E9x M3 I would go DCT. If I was buying used out of warranty I would go for 6-spd MT.

There is nothing in the world like the DCT/S65 combo. My manual days are long gone behind me.

it's because in europe the manual transmission is for paupers, that's why you get it on rental cars.

i live in the uk and would never spec manual transmission on a 'nice' car, aka... any BMW

i consider myself an enthusiast

no way
That seems weird to me as well. What is the OP source for this data?

Same here. I bought my e92 with 3,600 miles in September of '08 after the original owner took delivery of the exact same spec car, but with DCT.

I thought there were only 67 LHD M3 CRTs? Why is there 5 RHDs? I want one now!

I must be seeing this wrong:
ROW e92 pre- LCI 7938 MT units
ROW e92 Post LCI 593 MT units

I know the initial production run was all MTs but still those numbers still don't seem right.

I must say the numbers on the discrepancy of 6mt/DCT between US/Can and RoW is quite surprising. Granted about the only thing I know about European drivers is top gear and they always talk about a proper transmission being manual and how they hate the "flappy paddle" gear box.

A quick look gives:
84% of cars in the UK are MT
7% of cars in the USA are MT
The UK has such a strong history of buying performance cars with MTs
that it makes the figures for the E92 LCi ROW RHD of 300 MTs against 3716 DCT look mental.

Looks like all those DCT vs. 6MT arguments DID have an effect and the better transmission won out in the end.

After 2008, I did not see a new coupe with MT at any dealership visited in four different states, but there was always one or more DCT units available. Not even the most competent client advisor can sell what isn't on the showroom floor or lot. That is why the built to order ratio of MT-DCT was very different from the total US/CA sales ratio.

The DCT lag problems thread was one of the biggest and most permanent thread on the forum for years. Another probably more significant weakness of the DCT is the direct consequence of giving up the control of clutch level of engagement to a computer in stop-and-go situations. This of course lead to the inability to fully control the level of agressiveness/response in stop-and-go daily driving situations. That limitation is shared with fully automatic transmissions. No uncertainties there with the MT.
Of course during spirited driving on the track the DCT shifts are machine fast but also suppress one dimension of driving involving the tactile joy of pulling and pushing gears in and out . There now is an aftermarket software available to tune the DCT behavior slightly differently. Anyone who knows basic algebra knows that if you start with two independent variables and you reduce that to only one then you have given up one degree of control. It does not matter how faster or more precise than you that computer is, the fact is you are now controlling only 1 dimension instead of 2 dimensions. No matter how you look at it, it is a loss of 1 dimension of control. Sure, you can program different curves for the lost variable that suit different driving style/situations but you are one degree closer to being on a parc attraction ride where you just sit and do nothing. Of course this has already started with self-driving cars.

M3's are fairly close by in the US by comparison.

According to my math, which admittedly could be wrong!

Pre-LCI & LCI - all body types

6MT - 11,325 ~44%
DCT - 14,347 ~56%

Total US/Can = 25,672
