I almost bit the dust today in my M3

I was returning on a country 2 lane road back into the city after purchasing some flowers for our garden at a near by town. Traffic was steady in the oncomming lane as I spotted a white car moving over the double yellow line into my lane.

To avoid a head on collision I quickeley steeared to the right (half my car in my lane the other half in the gravel shoulder area of the road). I came safely to a full stop glad I had both hands on the stearring wheel. I am almost certain the driver was either fumbling with his phone (a non handsfree of course) or was texting and lost control of his car.

The incident made me think, with all the gagets car manufacturers are now adding on new cars, how about a device that renders non handsfree phones or texting devices inoperative? I hope it will be in the cards soon it might save some lives perhaps even yours. We never know what is going on in cars speeding toward us in the oncoming lane do we now.

So keeping both hands on the wheel is the best line of defence, I'm glad I did or I might not be here to share this with you.

Drive safely you hear and take good care.

Rolf

So glad you survived that Rolf. It's amazing how quickly things can go south when you are just out on an errand or drive, blissfully unaware what is about to transpire.

The one issue with disabling non-hands-free devices in cars is that you don't know if they are in the possession of passengers or not. Or at least you don't know that without some very sophisticated (and expensive, and weight-adding) sensors and electronics in the cabin of the car. And even then, whose to say the guy doesn't have a backup phone sitting in the seat or console? So, if you disable those devices then, in the event of a true emergency, you actually make the situation worse.

Thank you mkoesel, much appreciated. You make a valid point I do agree. However, I am sure the onboard computer in most modern cars can be programmed without too much difficulty to render such devices inorable when the ignishion is activated. This should then not create an issue if the device(s) need to be used in an emergencey. Unless of course someone is in hot persuit while driving your car.

Anyway it was just a thought.

If you want to be a dick to one of the most respected members of this board - then here is one back at you.

It's as in it is, comes with an apostrophe - not Its.

Just noticed a thread you started.

'why doesn't car companies put thise feature in their A/c'

Nice.....................

I am sure you mean well - and welcome.

Stay classy Alabama. Rolf, I was expecting another story about dsc related issues leading to one losing control of their car. But we know you too well for that to be the issue here. Good to hear you reacted appropriately and that your car listened to you.

Phew

gladd your fine. but the auto phone disable is just rediculous. I have the right to have my phone when ever I want, its just that some idiots don't know how to properly use it or when to use it for that matter. Why should they screw it up for everyone else. If they do add that too future generations of cars i will definitely not buy it.

I am glad you are ok... Sometimes people fall asleep from driving too... imo that is just as bad as texting and driving drunk.

Glad your ok, but lets not get carried away with limitations and device controls. Next thing we know there will be a device inpoace that will not allow one to chew gum and walk at the same time.

Glad you're ok Rolf.

But how are you so sure this had to do with talking/texting while driving?

Also, from a practical standpoint, I doubt what you're asking for would be feasible. First, as another poster pointed out, it would need to be a pretty precise device locator to know if it were a driver's device vs. a passenger's device. Second, getting all phone manufacturers to agree on a standard "kill switch" interface would be nigh impossible. Third, the possibility of malicious exploitation of such a "kill switch" would be a serious concern. If someone could hack the interface successfully, they could disable any phone anywhere.

Thanks all Fellows for your kind words, much apprichiated. I only posted this to put you all on guard what I am sure you all knew already It is good to be reminded. In my case I lost a good friend only about one and a half year ago (he was only 29, {loved and sold BMW's} when he last control of his M3 on a rainy day), perhaps I take things like this more serious then the next fellow.

As for the cell phone comment, I do agree with you all as we say in German "one should never pull everyone over the same hair comb" too many laws have been changed not keeping this in mind It's just many thoughts go thru ones mind when situations like this arise.
