Anyone done this mod on a DCT car?...

I'm planning to swap out the front ashtray for the sunglasses tray as described in this DIY thread...

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7049

Has anyone done this successfully on a DCT equipped car? Specifically, does the front centre console lift off in exactly the same way as described in the DIY thread?

Thanks in advance.

That is really cool but don't think all sunglasses will fit, looks like they have to be relatively svelte.

Yes, install is the same. The console is a PITA to pry off. You actually have to use enough force that I was afraid I was going to break the trim piece.

My sunglasses fit. Great mod for me since I don't smoke. Mine's a 6MT though

This is exactly what's delaying my attempt. I had a look yesterday and found absolutely no movement when trying to pull up the centre console from around the DCT shifter.

Please reasure me that if I keep pulling, it will eventually give, and that it won't break in the process...

Yeah, what I did was wrap a screwdriver in a cloth, jammed it in the seam of the trim, and just gently pried the piece up, working my way around the edges. Go slow so you don't damage your interior. It takes quite a bit of work. But the sunglasses holder is much more useful than the ash tray, IMHO.

That's great, so instead of pulling it up from the centre, I prise it up around the edge,... good idea about the screwdriver wrapped in a cloth. I'll give it a go next weekend, and am going to try to transfer the ambient lighting into the sunglasses tray.

Many thanks.

The downside is that you lose the power outlet, right?

Right, true, its just that if you want two devices plugged in, you are SOL. I Its too bad the tray does not preserve the outlet somehow (in some non-bstructive way), so you would still have it if you needed it in a pinch.

I believe there is a DIY on here somewhere with someone keeping the the cigarette lighter and doing the mod. But if I remember correctly they moved the location to outside on the passenger side of the console. I didn't like the look, plus the second source for power in unnecessary for me.

Finally did this mod to my car, and extremely happy with how it went and the results!
