I don't think I added this yet…

I built out the behind-the-button bits for the rear fog button of my '08 to get that working. No problems there. However, I did notice one other bit of functionality on the switch overall. Specifically, if the lights are set to auto but have not yet turned on, you can get them to turn on by pressing what would be the front fog lights button. Pretty handy!

On my new-to-me '11, this latter functionality was not enabled out of the box. So, when shaving off the little tabs to get the rear fogs working, I did the same to the front switch. Voila! Same functionality there

Enjoy!

Boom, just did this to my M3- took a little longer than 15 minutes, but that's because I was so paranoid about breaking any of the clips so I went slow. Panel removal is a cinch if you have the right panel tools (amazon has them on the cheap) and following the guide was easy. Instead of using a utility knife to clip off the button tabs, I used a sharp set of nail clippers which was way faster for me and gave me a very precise clean cut. I think these set of lights may help ward off idiots who think it's a great idea to tailgate people.

i'm curious, the bulb is obviously already there, but does it get used for any other function? looks like it is in the same location as the reverse light.

Yes, the two bulbs used for the rear fog lights are also used for the adaptive braking feature. When you brake heavily (like ABS engaging), these two additional lights turn on for extra brightness to better alert whoever is behind you.

Yep, you'll see the guys who do coding refer to them as "electronic brakeforce distribution lights".

The rear fog light bulbs are not LED, but incandescent/halogen.

Just did this in my 2010 e90 m3 took about 20-30 min. Pain in the ass to get the ac vent out but put a little force and it will loosen. I get satisfaction from diys plus it only costs free ninety nine👌😎

Great DIY!
and to me for all the Legos I've bought my kids over the years, Seriously, It took me longer to find the 4 pieces, Mainly the flat 3, than it did to take everything apart and I took it apart twice, Because I hadn't read far enough(second page ) about 2008 M3's not having the white rubbery parts...
Anyhow, well done

finally a chance to do this DIY.

I didn't have a panel popper, but I found it you open your door all the way and look at the back of the vent you can push the corner towards the driver seat. Then start the wiggling.

My Legos took a hit tho. Had to a head. OP.

Geeze, that was stupid simple. Ended up using a mini pair of side cutters to lop off the tabs. My early build 2011 (5/2010) didn't require the lego pieces. Not sure when I will ever use them, but that was fun.
