What do you guys use to take off your wheels??

I know this seems like a simple and stupid question, but I'm using a tire iron and its getting worn and was wondering what you all use. And where did you purchase?

Thanks for the input!

Yes, tire iron is tedious. If you get an impact it will speed things up a lot. Don't use the impact to torque the lugs, just to spin them on and off. Torque them by hand with a torque wrench set to 88-90ft.lb.

Good ole fashion cross tire iron. Does the job, provides plenty of leverage and allows you to spin the lugs rapidly.

Of course I use a torque wrench to tighten down.

I use a 24" gearwrench 1/2" breaker bar with an extension and then spin the lug bolts off with a cordless drill.

I have a Dewalt corless impact wrench but yeah.. only need to use it to remove lugnuts, never use it to put lugnuts on. I learned the hard way.

I like technology, if the OP has other needs for an impact, then sure spend the $250 on it. If only need is tire removal, a cross works just fine, and almost as rapidly.

Plus it works out your lats

There's certainly something to be said for low-tech but effective. Gets the job done with no moving parts and at very reasonable cost. Battery won't die, motor won't wear out etc.

Biggest downside with the old school tire iron is that a lot of custom wheels have the lugs sunken down into the wheel without a lot of space around them. One can use a lug extender to work around that, but then it's one more thing to keep track of.

So what happens if you over torque the bolts?

I didn't bust out my torque wrench. I just used my tire iron to make them equally tight.

Too loose and they can back off. Too tight and bolt stretches and gets weaker.

Breaker bar, 1/2" extension, and socket?

Torque them too tight and they'll crack. Torque them too loose. And they'll either back off, or crack.

As long as you don't hammer down on your typical 18v battery impact you will likely not over torque the nut. I've started using a 12v impact which is much smaller, lighter and more versatile. Just snugs the lug nut and you get a good 1/4 turn on the torque wrench before it clicks.
