my wild prediction: m3 engine in 1 series

i just got the new road and track, and it said regarding the next z4: "the z4 will ride on the current 3 series platform, which means it will also share the same engines - we're told that includes the 300-bhp twin-turbo inline-6 as well as an M roadster with the M3's 4.0-liter 414-bhp V-8."

there was another thread posted recently about a camoflouged new z4 and an m3 and a 135 with their badges blacked out being tested around so-cal. Now what do those 3 cars have in common? (besides the fact they're bimmers).

This may seem true. But, we will know for sure definitely within the next 3-6months. I have said this many times, but if BMW does not do this the aftermarket company Hartge certainly will. Look for this to happen within the next year or so.

dont they already have a heavier component in the rear area to balance the engne? what happens when they put a v8 in there? :iono:

Bear in mind the 1er is narrower than the 3 series (and shoehorning the V8 isn't a longitudinal issue in a car that carries an inline 6 - but the 90 degree V angle will be a tight fit side-to-side).

But the good thing about a V8 is it would take weight away from the area ahead of the front axle centerline (it'd be better for weight distribution than the I6 and the intrercooler). Maybe it'd be good enough that they could remove the trim weight. : -)

I think BMW advertised that the V8 was actually lighter than the I6 it replaced in the M3. So other than the issue atr_hugo mentioned, it won't tip the car's nose into the ground. I have to say that considering what a little beast our 135 is with the N54, the thought it with of that V8 power just leaves my brain numb. :eyebulge:

What bothers me is the OP's comment that the Z4 is going to the 3 series platform. Does this mean its getting bigger? If true, BMW please give us a Z1 with the N54 and Z1M with the V8! :thumbup:

There is supposed to be a Z2 on the way - you are correct the Z4 will be getting the 'full pork' upgrade. ; -)

Why do car manufactures think they have to make every new generation bigger? The reason I went away from porsche was there new cars are getting huge; hopefully somebody will smack the bmw designers before they do the same.

hey, us 6'5" roadster lovers want somebody to think of us too! face it, americans are getting bigger (in both directions). I like the 1, but I don't fit in the current Z4. If I fit in a new Z4M hardtop with a V8, I would cream my pants!

Agreed.. I'm fairly certain the V8 is lighter.

Based on the fact that the Z4 is currently being made in Spartanburg, SC, won't they need to ship the engines and other parts from Germany? I am not quite sure that any parts are currently shipped to Spartanburg for the current model Z4 or any other model made at the Spartanburg, SC plant.. the tour guide of the plant made a statement that the vehicles made in Spartanburg, SC are shipped worldwide, so hence my question.. :smile:

i am pretty sure the Z4 is no longer made in SC...production is now entirely in germany...


i think only the x5 and maybe x6 are made in SC now

not positive but I believe the engine compartment is identical. the only narrower part is the body panels.

I won't hold my breath for an M badge 1-series. If I'm BMW, why would I manufacture a 1-series that will likely outperform the longstanding champion sports-performace M3?

As it is, the 135i is a great choice for customers that want the pure BMW driving experience, but many of whom cannot or will not chell out the bucks for an M3. It still sits below the M3 in both performance, trim, and price.

well look at the pro's if they did do it....save a little money putting it into a smaller body...and when the price comes down a few $ its attracts alot more buyers...so it would be quantity not a jacked up price

I'm not sure what the question on shipping parts around the world was... but unless something changed since I took the factory tour on June 12, they are still building Z4's (in the same line as the X5 and X6) in Spartanburg.

They would never EVER put an M3 engine in a 1 series. That would be complete OVERKILL. My guess is BMW has something else up their sleeve for the performance variant of the 1 series. Hopefully BMW dosent want to be without a perf NA inline 6 in the line up.

I beleive as of now the Z4 is being made there. But an expansion is planned and once complete the plant will produce only cars in the x series..3,5 and 6...

with the Z series going back to germany.

Correct. End of August is the end of production of Z4s in the US. April '09 starts production back here in Germany. I've been told to expect "significant" changes for the '09 model, adn that there would be a US version in that year. Interpret that as you wish, but that news made me jump on the current '08 Z4 M Coupe, which I like just the way it is (which is sans I-drive and retractable metal roof among other things).
