I'm almost certain in your high adrenaline state you misinterpretated the sergeant. "They wanted me to stay behind him" was most likely actually "OK we don't need or want you to chase him, please stay away".

I'm quite certain there isn't a single police jurisdiction in the U.S. that would tell a private citizen to engage in a potenital high-speed pursuit as a result of a minor traffic accident. If so, that seargent could lose his job, seriously.

I can't say that I can relate. I do notice that it gets a LOT of looks but I haven't really had the notion that anybody was acting in an aggressive or hateful manner.

He's also wrong that our cops won't chase. We had a high speed chase in Edmonton a number of years ago where an EPS squad car literally cut a car in half during a high speed pursuit killing the child in the back seat.

Right because you were there listening to the whole conversation right? That whole 20 or so minutes I was on the phone with a cop telling him whether this guy was going, he was telling me to stop? Adrenaline rush - maybe. But I'm pretty sure my mind didn't fabricate 20 minutes of
Interaction with the police followed by 4 of them cornering him on the street exactly where I was telling them to go.

You guys are going to laugh when you see the damage.

I didn't even see it until the whole fiasco was over, and I thought it was a lot worse from how the collision sounded. The chase was a little overkill in relation to the damage to my car ( which is another reason I can't figure out why the dude would not freaking stop ).

So while you are posting the pics of the damage, go ahead and post the pic you snapped during the "chase" of his license tag you said you got as well.

i'm starting to get a sense of hypocrisy in this thread

on the one hand, some praise and give kudos to "kill" stories on other cars trying to "race" M cars on public roads. In the same fashion, some claim to go on spirited runs on public roads. Not saying it is anyone here specifically, but in general on this forum about those kinds of threads.

Now the OP is getting criticized for pursuing and driving aggressively against someone who damaged his car and not wanting to take responsibility for it. The OP, in my opinion, did what he had to do. I don't condone taking the law into your own hands, but I think the OP acted reasonably and some of us in here would have done the same thing. a) call the police, b) and if possible, follow the aggressor car. There have been other instances of hit and run stories on this forum as well, and those affected were not criticized.

everybody on 45 is "high speed" or stuck in a traffic jam. i guess it is relative. i have been at 100 on 45 many times. not racing. just empty lanes and a quick burst for fun. the OP wasn't doing anything special. it is houston.

good points sir

I CALL BS! No cop I know would ever advise you chasing (follow), they would just ask for the tag # and general direction.

No way this happened. Get the tag number and let the cops do the rest

there was absolutely no reason for you to follow

I don't think the OP is being criticized for following as much as the dumbass cop who advised him to do so. That cop who advised a private citizen to engage in a potential volatile high speed pursuit was a total idiot and I'm positive was deviating from a normal policy of just giving plate number to cops and letting them take over.

Doing any type of high speed pursuit by a non leo is illegal. It doesn't matter what anyone tells you. If there was a fatality caused by the OP's pursuit he would be posting from the Harris County Jail. Please understand I am sympathetic to the OP, and I like to drive fast, but only when conditions permit. Weaving through traffic to pursue an idiot involved in a minor accident is both unnecessary and poor judgement.

yes, I understand. The point I was trying to make that whether it be spirited driving, "kill" stories, or pursuits, all are against the law. Hence my thought on hypocrisy where the OP is being criticized, while there are other stories on this forum of people doing illegal things.
