Put a really big NRA sign outside. It doesn't even matter if you own a gun, they'll get the idea.

Most people screen dog noise subconsciously because dogs often bark at night for food, or attention. Also because of requirements in many cities for "safe enclosure" of pets, many dogs won't even be able to get into the house to "defend" against a home invasion. Having an ADT sign is actually a big deterrent to potential robbers if it's displayed prominently. It's not there just for advertising, it's part of the deterrent.

Additionally ADT in my city has a 2 minute, and 18 second average response time if the alarm isn't deactivated by a code in time. Not sure if there are many burglars that could manage to rip off a safe in 2 minutes, but it's not a lot of time before you are going to be facing some deputies with their guns drawn.
I partially disagree. I found that my home alarm (installed by previous owner) was very inconvenient. Part of the problem was the motion sensors, which just aren't practical with a dog. My house has an Invisible Fence sign on the mailbox post, and dog toys (and crap) in the backyard. Anyone casing my house would be very well aware that I have a dog (a large dog). I agree that alarm signs are a deterrent, but so are signs of a dog (any dog). Our local sheriff department (1/2 mile away) agrees, and certainly is a deterrent as well.

My girlfriend's uncle is a cop, and he has a dog. His house got broken into one morning recently when he was at the dentist, his wife was at work, and the kids were at school. The guy kicked in the front door (if he had a security system it would have started beeping). Whatever he did, they found the dog wimpering in a corner (its medium sized, golden lab). They stole one of his weapons from under his bed.

Get a security system.

My wife's cousin's brother-in-law's house was broken into and they had ATD. The perps got away before the police arrived. That doesn't mean ATD doesn't work any more than your story means dogs are not a deterrent.

My point wasn't about having a dog physically guarding your yard, but the actual value of having a dog bark as a warning (to your neighbors or other people) when you're not home. It's a proven fact that most neighbors screen the barking.

Also, many dog owners don't even have a system in place for allowing their dog access to 100% of their home which is pointless in a home robbery when you're not present. It's just the backyard a lot of the time and that's it.

i have a monitored alarm and several high caliber guns handy at all times, even on the go. guess that's what's great about my fun-lovin', gun-totin' state.

My dog roams the inside of our house. He's a shar-pei, wherein the breed was developed as guard dogs/fighting dogs. Trust me, he's very protective of my house. He'll give me enough warning if anybody enters our house...and I know he'll attack if it ever comes to it. To be honest, I'll probably be acting as back up to him with my gun

Seriously though, how many of you have had to put your gun(s) to use or your security system? Just curious to know...
I'd rather have it and never need it than needing it and not having it.

Just think of it as insurance... most people never have to use it, but it's good to have it when you do need it!

Very few people that have been scared that badly, such that lethal force was necessary, would be likely to answer your question in an online forum. However, there are some strange people out there, so...

Hopefully no one here, or elsewhere, ever needs to do so. But, it doesn't hurt to be prepared and trained should the need arise.
