Lenses in Hawaii

So I was convinced to pack light and didn't want to lug all my stuff here on my Honeymoon. I ended up with just my 5DMKII, 50mm 1.4 and "the brick" along with my 430EXII in a very small DSLR shoulder bag. I got here and about 30 minutes later was already online ordering some stuff from Borrowlenses.com for the week.

Here is what I got:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II
77mm Circular Polarizing Filter
Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead
Manfrotto 055MF3 3-Section MagFiber Tripod
Canon Extender EF 2x II
Manfrotto Bogen 681 Three-Section Monopod
Neutral Density 4x 77mm Filter
Lowepro SlingShot 300 AW Camera Bag

Gonna shoot lots of surfing, some nature, probably try some long exposures with the ND filter (maybe some night time stuff too)... should be fun.

Any tips?

Tip #1: Don't piss off the wife spending more time with your camera than with her.

well my 24mm will have to be wide enough on the FF sensor. I think Ricky (E80E90) also has an 18-55mm I can borrow if I want to go wider. I was more concerned with getting closer to the stuff I can't get closer to like the surf. 70-200 + 2x extender should be good even though I probably would have gotten the 100-400 if it had been in stock.

Who are you again?

Kudos on the marriage. Don't screw it up.

Hope the pics are worthy of the fortune you must have spent at BorrowLenses.

The 24mm is a must for the many scenic opportunities and that'll be wide enough on your FF. I don't understand the 50mm, but I got over that in the 1960s.

The 70-200mm with the 2x TC will be good for surfing if you add a bit of a crop. I'd be a little worried about AF speed.

On Oahu, you can get right up to the Bansai Pipeline. I used my 7D and 70-200mm and the 1.4x TC below:

Leave the lads alone. They have forever to do that stuff. Might not get back to Hawaii for a long time. If ever.

bangin and shootin, maybe some at the same time....

and I like rodi do like the

Premarital sex

though i don't know why he made the type smaller and more invisible... seems like he's trying to hide something....

hahaha, he said "lads!"

made it less visible because, honeymoon's aren't so much for banging anymore, like the olden days of no premarital sex. so, clearly shooting is more important.

Yeah I really wanna get up there. I have a rental car from tomorrow till tuesday so I'll be up on the north shore almost every day. It's been flat though so no much to shoot I hear. Hopefully that'll change. Waikiki has been charging since this morning. The earthquake off NZ sent some pretty nice swells. The wife and I were out surfing the Canoe's break this afternoon. Was her first time catching some waves.

Lens came, lots of fun to play with. 400mm is AWESOME. I need a 100-400 stat.

the 100-400 is a very nice lens, but it's a monster to carry around and if you don't have any real purpose to have it, it works out only as an occasional use lens.

also, if you're used to lenses that are constant F stops like a 2.8 or f4, you will find it a bit of a pain sometimes as it has a changing F stop requiring you to adjust exposure every time you zoom in and out.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 100-400, but it really only has use on one of the 2 cameras i have as my 70-200mm zooms almost as far when put on my crop body. And it maintains it's aperture settings throughout focal range.

Uses i have found for my 100-400mm: Shooting horse riding events on my 5DmkII and very seldomly on my 7D, good for a profile shot of a horse jumping a fence, but too much zoom for the rest of the ring, unlike on 5DII

and some shooting of birds on the 7D. Now if i lived in Hawaii and was shooting surfers all day, or doing celeb red carpet events, it might be great for some profile shots while stuck in a crowd a little far back.

Would i recommend the lens? Yes i would, it's one you would keep for years and enjoy from time to time.

Do you need it? No, you could probably grab a 70-200 F4 and a 2X tc and have just as much flexibility. plus you'd have a TC you could use on other lenses as well. It is big and heavy, and the push pull type zoom makes a lot of people nervous. subjects have to be about 9' away at least.

The surf pics above is shot with a 70-200 and 2x TC.
