E92 M3 vs F10 M5/F12/F13 M6

Car and Driver has the new M6 convertible listed 0-60 in 4 seconds and 12.4 seconds for 1/4 mile and similar performance for the M5 and our e92 M3.

Have I read up in inaccurate information or do these three vehicles compare in terms of performance? I realize we are comparing a coupe to a 4 door sedan to a gt coupe/convertible; however, I'm curious to see how we compare to these cars. IMHO, if i owned an M6 I wouldn't want to be outperformed to an M3.

I presume you are defining "outperform" to mean straight line acceleration only (even though there are lots of components relative to "performance").

You need to be careful comparing magazine "test" numbers between different cars on different days. Not an accurate comparison. The M3 is not as fast in a straight line as the new M5. Maybe the M6 cab due to weight. I personally like the M3 even if it is "slower" in a straight line but not because it is necessarily a "better" car but it is better for me

I cant compare to the new m5 and m6 but drove the E92/E90 M3 and E60 M5 at M Performance Driving School and its a world of difference taking turns with all that extra weight. They are just two very different cars. You can have a family sedan with all the luxury one could want and go as fast as the smaller/coupe that may not fit your needs/lifestyle.

Yeah different types of cars.
But the M5 has a fastest recorded time of 0-60 3.7 and 1/4 mile 11.78 sec.

I've owned an m3 and driven the new m6.

The m6 is much faster. The m3 handles better.

You are comparing a heavier convertible m6 to a lighter coupe m3. Different cars for different drivers. The M6 coupe is faster than the vert. And I personally wouldn't be worried about an e92 m3 being faster than me if I owned a brand new m6 vert. Different class of car.

Recently tested M5 pushed the M button and took off like there is no tomorrow.
Much faster than my M3 at least it felt that way.

The monster-like power delivered by these new M5/M6 is amazing. It definitely is faster than the m3 on a straight acceleration but you can't really ignore the weight. It's quite obvious especially coming to braking. That said, I really like to F10 M5 and having been looking for one if the deal is right.

The low end torque is all the E92 is missing.

I drove the new M5. It felt heavy and the steering was very vague. But the interior was gorgeous and acceleration was brutally fast. But it just doesn't feel like what a M car should feel like. The E39 will always be the best M5 ever produced.

at the end of the day, it depends on what you want the car for. If you want a drag racer, buy a high HP car. If you want a track machine go with a lighter car. If you want comfort and practicality get a 528i, or whatever the entry level is.

That is where those 0-60 and 1/4 times are really misleading as so much depends on a good launch, especially cars with huge torque down low can be a mofo to launch and cars like the m3 clearly do a pretty great job of putting down good 0-60 times and quarter times.

However roll them at 30-40mph and stomp the gas, and the M5 would literally put 2 bus lengths within the first 2 seconds of the race if not quicker and at 120mph it would be about a football field. I drove one for a day the other week and honestly the M3 felt so ridiculously slow after getting back into it after the M5 it was depressing for a moment. Until I listened to the sound of my v8 at 8500 rpms then I was happy again! I personally enjoy the sound and delivery of power more than brute power as it just does not bring as much pleasure to me. Something about the aural experience of revving a car to 8500 in a small displacement v8 makes the driving experience like nothing else.
