Someone correct me if I am wrong but just like the Boxster Spyder, I believe that a/c is also available on the Cayman R as an option...

oohhh...they have the ceramic BBK option for it.

and....

What seems to be a valvetronic exhaust option that will vary the tone of the exhaust using a button mounted inside the cabin....cool!

...and BMW wants $5k for a freaking performance exhaust

lol where did you hear/see that. I just built one its $1,800 for the A/C and another $1,700 for the stereo too lol.

And I guarantee that is where almost all the weight savings from the Cayman S are.

I hated the green color that they showed it in, but besides that it looks sweet. But not a fan of taking stuff out (ie ac/radio) and charging you more money. It was weird enough that they made the cayman more expensive then the boxster in the first place.

If you add up the cost of the wheels, seats and a few other items is actually cheaper. I sold my Cayman S for the M3 and will not be going back to Porsche unless they sort out a few of their issues.

Would you mind elaborating?

I've been giving P some thought recently, as a weekend car.

I was wrong on the A/C, thought that was just to upgrade to auto a/c, but it appears there's no basic A/C option.
CDR-30 stereo is a no-cost option though, the $1700 is the bose updgrade.

i think they could ve done a lot more to merit an "R"

I nearly bought an S instead of my car - and honestly cant see buying the R over the S considering I'd need some options for sure and there goes the weight savings anyways.

I think the spyder is pretty brilliant too.

too bad they'll never see comparable hp to the 911's.

I guess I forgot to add the .

Well the Lotus is certainly everything except refined. Driving it for more than 30 min can severely numb your butt and legs. Thus the Cayman R has that slice of the market pretty much to itself, I'd think.

I went ahead and configured one online, came to $72k. That's very close to a nice used GT3... which still has back seats and therefore is justifiable to the wife...

The two biggest issues for the mid engine porsches are improper oiling and the suspension. These are only issues for those of who track regularly.

The engines are primarily designed to be in the 911. For the midship platform they turn them 180 degrees. This has caused oil starvation issues which will eventually be terminal on all hard tracked 06-08 caymans/boxsters. The new DFI engines have addressed this to a certain extent but it remains to be seen as to whether it is solved or simply band aided to get you some more time.

The suspension has a few concerns depending on your use. The biggest for me is the week pick up points that can fail under hard cornering and load. Mine did and porsche refused to cover it. Others have been luckier getting satisfaction from the dealer/pcna.

I considered a 911 when I bought the M3 but decided to wait a couple of years to see how this gen of engine holds up and with the 991 right around the corner, I decided to wait. I may go back. If not the new Elise is looking mighty interesting. My Elise was absolutely bullet proof with nearly 9k in track miles.
